  1. Wing burners from the 3/4" x 6" rectangles of brass sheet they sell in hobby shops. You can use a real mayfly wing from your local stream. Trace it on the brass with a marker them grind out the wing burner shape with a Dremel.
  2. try and understand what the "select" stuff is so you can get better value for the trade. Some select turkey tail feathers are those with no damage, fraying at the edges or stress marks through the length of the fiber. Additionally If your turkey feathers have nice bright white undamaged tips they are highly desirable to Classics fly tyers tying the "Jock Scott" fly.
  3. I think you are on the right path to getting the best for your money my sarcastic approach - most are made thin and cheap; they'll all fail eventually, not made to last along time I concerntrate on the warranty and how the company and shop purchased from handle failures
  4. yup - and the question is - how much is too much? "too much" is different from person to person
  5. hi perchjerker I'm super glad you are still around after 75 years; honestly no malice intended. Sorry but I don't buy what you say. I understand this stuff has been for sale to the general public forever along with Toluol (its used in the old version of Gudebrod color preserver), and Xylene (cleaning products) . After having a parent die from a disease that could have been brought on by exposure to some of these so called 'safe' chemicals and myself almost put in an early grave by a doctor who insisted "that drug does not create the symptomes your are having" I am extra carefull and somewhat unbelieving. They used to say waste motor oil was safe at least where I worked back in the seventies, I was covered with the stuff from head to toe :-); Now they know that waste motor oil is loaded with Benzene - one of the most cancer causing chemicals known to plants and animals and its absorbed through the skin! That is one of the reasons mechanics are starting to wear impermeable gloves! Of course the most famous one is agent orange - "here drink this stuff you young whipper snapper, it won't hurt yah; puts hair on your chest ..." with all due respect - I don't believe you can ever be too carefull around man made chemicals
  6. The Black and Chartruse Thingy, about 3.5 inches long.
  7. I believe that little wiggly tails big time cause fish to notice. However what drives me nuts is when the long tail wraps and fouls around the hook bend One can fish for hours without noticing, but the fly often ceases to catch fish when this happens/.
  8. Try your local dollar store. Possibly bargin stores around Halloween time too.
  9. I kills me that Acetone is a primary ingredient in Nail Polish Remover. Acetone is harmfull and there have been reports of kidney and liver issues to those exposed to high concentrations.
  10. Renzetti traveller for trout flys and the Classic Vise for Salmon and Steelhead flys. PS - something about the Renzetti that makes it soooo comfortable to tie on
