Maby Steve Farrar blend just isn't for me. Tried 15 wraps of 0.15 non lead wire, still didn't sink before i pushed it under. Maby i'll try some 0.25. -

Problem seems to be it's not enough to get them down without pushing them down under. But i will try adding some non lead wire to see how much it takes. -

I have a problem with SF flash blend holding too much air, it's boyant. Tested it in the kitchen sink. Had to push it under Water before it would sink. -
Securing eyes and finishing with UV on baitfish.
kimjensen replied to kimjensen's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I saw your thread. I'm not too worried about using my UV resin :-) As long as I can get them to stay on so the resin bonds them to the materials, I'm happy. :-) -
Guess what.... The 0.08 is the thick version. No wonder I was having problems getting a nice finish. I feel better if I buy the spooled fly tying mono instead of buying some random bulk spool. It doesn't cost that much at least to me. :-) 50 yards vs 200 yards? Seems like UTC is a bit well, not generous :-)

Hi. Do you go over the eyes with UV resin, or do you just fill top and bottom gap? Do you go over materials too?
-
Big thumps up for a helping forum.

Hi. I have some Uni mono in a 0.08 or something, but i think it's tricky to Work with. Have you Guys experienced any difference in products that were easier than others to Work with? It's kind of stiff too.

Just tied a couple baitfish with SF blend. It is actually quite a stiff material. Looking forward to see how it swims. I hear you on the price point. That's also why I search for the cheapest place to buy since not all stores have the same price for the same stuff. It's easy to get carried away with all the bling. :-) -

Sorry, double post. -
Your favorite synthetic for making baitfish.

Yes SF blend is kind of expensive. Fortunately not all stores have the same price :-) Just got a few colors home to experiment with. It's very new to me to tie baitfish patterns, so I'm learning what to order and what to skip :-) Extra select craft fur seems pretty inexpensive. The slinky fibers mix looks quite nice too and is a little cheaper than SF blend. -
What is your favorite synthetic material for making baitfish patterns?

Regal, Dyna King, HMH, Anvil Apex/atlas.

Thank you very much for the help. -
Hi. Do you prefer your nymphs to have a bigger, smaller or same size bead as the thorax of the fly? What do you think give the best profile?

Regal, Dyna King, HMH, Anvil Apex/atlas.

Thank you for the help. It is quite an expensive vise, especially the stainless steel jaw version. I tie everything from size 4 streamers to dry flies and nymphs. -
I'm not sure I need a true rotary vise. I never really use it besides when I use UV glue and turn the fly around. I looked at Anvil Apex a week ago and I had a hook in it, seemed okay. The rotation was fine. I also looked at Regal Medallion. My hand rested so comfortable on that vise. I took a really big hook and loaded it and it could not hold it firmly at all (this was a very thick hook) i took a large royal wulf and set in the groove and it was firmly hold in place. I'm a little worry if all hooks need to be placed in that groove to be hold securely in place? I tie small flies too and i can't imagine I can put them in that groove and still have access to the hook. They don't have the stainless steel version in store and I'm not sure they will order one home just for me to try and decide. Smallest hook I have now is size 16. Haven't tried Anvil Atlas, but it's prize looks good. I have no idea were to try an HMH (limited vise market) but how would you compare it to Regal?

Sometimes I think it's to start an academic discussion just for the sake of looking smart.

As long as I need a backpack when fishing, I can't find a comfortable position to carry my net. Everything rust in saltwater and I hate rust. The magnet holder rust. So for the last couple times I've been out fishing, I haven't brought my net. It certainly is more easy to control the fish with a net. And it's less likely I loose the fish if I can grab it quickly with the net, than landing it on the beach.

Kind of funny, I never knew where biots came from. Yesterday I was at a fly shop and saw goose biots but no turkey biots. Looked at big turkey feathers and didn't know they were on the side of the feather :-) I could have had turkey biots if I had known :-)

Or tin i think it is? (the lead free round wire we buy for fly tying) The reason I don't use lead is because of its toxic.
-
Isn't lead free wire solder wire?

I found Deer creek diamond hard UV resin at the fly shop today. I knew I had to have it. I haven't tied any flies yet, but I made a test on some paper and it cures completely tack free. The laser stylus pen works on Loon too, but not tack free, or at least I haven't tested it enough to jump to conclusions yet.
