  1. Thanks guys. I'm leaving Thursday night to bother the Brookies in my favorite stream for a long weekend. Part of my b'day present from the wife. I've had all my stuff packed since Monday night. Really not anxious to get up there. LOL
  2. If you use a computer to watch tying videos or movies while you tie, those swing-out monitor brackets are cool.
  3. Well, I'd check out some vises in the $150-200 range, then take my wife and kid out to BURGER KING (you get a free crown). I'm not as cheap as SOME of the guys here!

Peterjay, you got any more sisters? And does she have a boat?

    Need a name

Mine are named Colleen and Patricia (otherwise known as "Tater"). After that, 4 boys with boys names.
  6. Welcome, Sarunas. Always interesting to see how others from different countries approach flyfishing and tying. Pull up a chair and make yourself comfortable.
  7. I guess about 30 years or so. Includes a couple of years of no tying due to unavoidable interuptions. Have had other hobbies/sports (Ham Radio op for 40+ years), but tying has always been there.
  8. Welcome. I think you'll enjoy this site. Always something going on, and a great place to exchange ideas. Have fun.
  9. Hi tastrout, welcome to the site. You'll find pleanty of patterns here, both well known and originals. Hope to see some of your work pop up here.
  10. The other reason thread weight (diameter) is important is bulk. If you use too heavy a thread on small flies, the thread builds up unless you use fewer wraps. I do almost all my dry flies with 12/0.
  11. I'm surprised no one has been using the old college standby - a 3'x7' door laid across a 2 drawer file cabinet at each end. big surface area with 4 file drawers for storage.
  12. I use one of those plastic parts drawer organizers. It has 30 small drawers, 6 across and 5 down. I use the larger drawers on the bottom for bigger stuff. Hooks are in drawers by type and size. columns of drawers are for dry, wet, nymph, streamer with the largest sizes in the top drawer, and progressing down in size toward the bottom drawer. Any unusual hook styles go into remaining small drawers. Every drawer is labeled with the hook type and size, in large (3/4") letters.
  13. Using my extensive woodworking skills, I crafted a couple of tool holders from 3" long, 3" diameter pcs of White Birch (with the bark still on). Drilled some 1/4" diameter holes in one end, sprayed them with polyursomething and put felt on the other end. One is for tools, the other for bobbins.
  14. Very nice tie Nick. Already got the materials out to tie a few. thanks
  15. Redleg, don't be silly. It doesn't matter, as long as you get the leader straightner with the electric start. I use more or less the method Troutbum and others use. But I also have been playing with furled leaders. Love them so far, no probs with memory (the leaders, anyway).
  16. Wife dragged me to the new Ikea store near Detroit. Her mistake. She couldn't get me out of there. If you live near one, GO. hey have storage stuff like you wouldn't believe.
  17. Used to get rid of the bobbin holders on my vices till I got a rotory vice. When I put it on the stem of the vice, I didn't tighten the screw clamp very tight, stays put fine, and I can swing it out of the way when I need to.
  18. There are so many cats running around with no fur, they are now classified as a seperate breed. You even see them at cat shows. I have a brindle boxer, and my 18 yr old has a nice thick head of hair. (and he sleeps a lot)
  19. Greg - start giving the kids luggage, pots and pans, etc. for birthdays. Subtle, but after time they get the idea.
  20. Mine is a computer desk with one shelf. I added another shelf. Right next to ,and butted up-to, it is another, fancier computer "L" shaped desk (actually for the 'puter). At the other end of the tying desk is a microwave cart with 2 shelves. Also have thread rack and very large cork board mounted on the wall. Tying desks are a lot like cars, you're always tweaking them Lots of surface space, but could always use more.
  21. I get craft foam from wally world, among others. comes in packages of sheets of mixed colors. and it's CHEAP. Look around while you're there and you'll find lots of stuff you can use instead of paying the big bucks for it at the fly shop. I've used my dog, my cat,my brother's dog and cat, my 16yr old, candy bar wrappers, carpeting, brooms, wine bottle corks, Tyvek, etc. Look around.
  22. OK, I'm in. Clarification - Do we keep an item from the box, and replace it with another? :dunno:
  23. Welcome funnel30. You'll find this a great place for info and tips. Don't be bashful about asking questions, this site is a great resource.
