  4. This is a really simple nymph that can be varied in numerous ways. The bead head can have different colors or metals, the tailing material can vary, the thorax dubbing can vary, thread color, absence or presence of a hotspot, etc. This fly can be easily tied in a variety of sizes, becoming more difficult as the hook gets larger. 5. A short video on fishing topwater flies for redfish in Southeast Louisiana. While the fish were interested in poppers, they didn't go after whole heartedly so I switched to a blunt faced floater that dips and dives just below the surface, which still gives a surface strike action but is easier for the redfish to inhale being just below the surface. 9. Here's a video I put together including how to tie my Action Caddis and how to perform a Dubbing Whip Finish. I tied this at the International Fly Tying Symposium, and people liked it. So, I figured I'd show it to you all. I, personally, learned the dubbing whip from Johnny Utah, who is a phenomenal fly tier. Check out my blog too: www.flyonlyzone.blogspot.com. Watch the Video
  10. This is a classic nymph. Typically referred to as an all-purpose nymph, the Hare's Ear is a super effective nymph for many types of waters and conditions. Although what it represents is debatable, many agree it is some sort of small mayfly, when tied in smaller sizes. These flies can be most realistically tied from about size 8 down to size 22. I typically tie these in natural Hare's Ear, but these can be tied in olive and black (and a bajillion other colors, but olive and black are the two most appropriate other colors). Additional beads, lead, flash backs, etc. is added for variation. As for tailing, some people use Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear Guard Hair, Coq De Leon, etc. I typically use Pheasant tail. The rib can either be a gold wire or a small flat gold tinsel. The thorax cover is mottled turkey tail. Take some flexible hair spray and spray the feather. This will keep the fibers together. The thorax is typically the same dubbing as the abdomen, and usually a bit buggier and more guard hairs are present. Some add legs, some don't. Once again, PT fibers or CDL are suitable for this purpose. Another addition that can be made is a "hot spot." This is most easily found in the Czech style nymph. This is a bright, fluorescent color like orange, red, or pink that will trigger the trout or grayling to strike. It is a point of heavy contrast and trigger for the fly.
