  1. I am 53, and I still don't have a large "stockpile" of stuff. With the exception of my fly tying equipment and my boat, everything I own for fishing fits in my van. My 14 foot jon-boat and 15hp outboard get me to all the fish I can handle. (In Florida you need a boat, wading isn't very easy with mud bottomed shallow lakes, weed lined ponds and alligators.)

Keep your fishing simple. If you're fishing streams and rivers you can wade, then all you need is a pair of chest waders. Get a light pair, slightly larger than you are. During colder months, layer sweats and "long-johns" under the waders for warmth. In the cool times, just a pair of pants to keep the waders from chafing. In the middle of summer, no waders, just a pair of shoes and shorts ... the water's cold, but you can always get out to warm up.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in California. I was fishing a river east of Sacramento and was wading. The only mistake I made was not have a pair of wading shoes. The water was cold, but I was working hard enough to keep warm. But my feet were so cold I could have sliced myself open on a clam or glass and not known.

Building up a garage full of equipment isn't necessary to enjoying fishing.

  2. 1. If it didn't cost much for the lot, and you doubt the legality of using a particular feather, then don't. Take it to your local zoo or animal recovery facility and ask them what you've got.

    2. If you aren't selling the flies tied with the material, and the material is already "harvested", then don't worry about it. It's not like someone will see you flinging a fly and call the police. "Hello, 911? I can see a guy throwing a fly at the trout with a snowy owl feather in the tail!"

  3. Well done Mike you spotted the deliberate mistake!

You could weight the head of the first minnow you tie to ensure it is the right way up.

    There's a SBS here

    Cheers,

    C.

Deliberate ... you want one of them riding upside down? Or just on the "prototype" will it be this way?

Anyway ... I like the SBS. I have not acquired the UV resin yet, but this pattern is probably the straw that'll make me get some.

    Thank you.

  4. I haven't done any dying. It's just too easy to get the colors I need when I get the material in the first place. But I might be getting some deer hair from some hunting buddies, so I might be getting into dying soon. My reason for replying to this thread though is to make an observation.

Why is it we try to dye materials with expensive dyes ... when any number of food stuffs will leave permanent stains on our favorite clothes? Just find the food that matches the color you want and spill it on the material you want dyed. If it works like it does on my favorite shirt, color to come out ... period!!!

  5. That's a pretty cool looking set-up there, Crackaig. Just wondering if the hook will ride point up, which would be great, then the bottom fry will be upside down. Can you tie the bottom fry with the peacock on top, like the upper fry? I am waiting to see an SBS on this one .... please.

  6. You do know fall is here and winter is coming, right? Windiest times of the year, right? You lose too much, and you'll need anchors to keep from blowing away !!!

Okay, maybe you've got a little way to go before you get THAT light ... but wonderful work and keep on losing!!!

  7. I have got to put in my two cents on this crap you're spouting, PeterJay. Counselor or not, you need to learn some tact. Netabrookie ... more power to you. Do whatever makes you happy ... happy people don't need a drink or any other drug. PeterJay, nothing is worse than an "ex- (smoker) (drinker) (non-believer) (insert your own vice here) that feels they MUST point out their perception of others lack of will power. It's that whole "holier-than-thou" baloney that just gets on EVERYBODY else's nerves.

Okay ... got that off my chest. If I've offended anybody (excluding peterjay) I apologize.

  8. I don't want to wait ... go to the store, Steve ... and buy some of those floating plastic fish. Weight them with rocks and put them in the tank so I can see what it'll look like with color !!!

You are WAY TOO FAR into aquarium knowledge, my friend. I watch this thread, and read your information and I think, "Geez, I am WAY TOO lazy to do all that !!!"

  9. Okay, I was on the St. John's River yesterday, and I saw a bunch of these worms chewing on the lily pads. They just eat the top layer, so the water doesn't come through and drown them. I here bluegill smacking the pads, but I can't get a strike. I tried hooking one of the worms, but it just flipped off the first cast ... I gotta try tying some of these. What are you using for the colors? It's an exact match! My only suggestion is to tie them on a Kahle hook ... you should see the little worms wiggle when they fall in the water. Oh, and they float very well on top but once they get knocked under the surface tension, they have a hard time punching back through it to float on top again.

  10. Okay, so you want our name, our screen name and the name of the fly with the fly when we send them. I am guessing that the person who opens the package the flies come in will not be one of the judges.

I'll be ready to send my flies in this week ... address requested at this time, Horseshoes ... please. I am also sending you a PM for the address. Thank you.
