I agree with all of the answers. Its important that the hackle not exceed wing length I purchased a 6 inch stainless ruler and it will mearure down to 1 mm. Its nice to study well tied flies with it,and you can actually hold it to the screen or photo to mimic proportions. Hackle gauges are very helpful when tying on a" standard ".dry fly hook

To wingcase or not to wingcase?
Bruce Derington replied to RoyalWulff's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I think Dales first comment is right on I also agree that if you have confidence in the fly your going to be much more productive. Some of the most beat up flies in my box prove it. -

ever try a halo egg for steelhead?
Bruce Derington replied to fishaholic69's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
I use what sounds similar, they are nuke eggs and they work great :headbang: They have a nucleus made from a brite color mcfly foam or glow bug yarn, covered by a "halo" of normally white glow bug yarn -

The 1st. set of flies are interesting. They may impart better action if the heads were trimmed flat on the top and bottom :dunno:

Now , heres a top water pattern

I've used rubber legs on several patterns and they definately give a fly that special action that is often needed when doing that type of fishing
