  1. Kirk, You are more than welcome. Couple of years ago I had a good friend out for Smallies. I was having a great day catching, unfortunately he was not. I could feel the front of the boat getting heavier every time I caught another fish. Funniest part is that we had the same fly on. We came across a submerged log, I tyed on a Tokyo Spider. I told him to cast on top of the log, it was about 2 inches under water. For a split second It looked like God had removed a bucket worth of water. It was a fat 3 1/2 pounder. I do not believe it has been taken off his fly rod yet. Good luck, Michael

  3. kennebec12 Brewer City Ordinances Chap. 35 - Art. 1 Sec. 100 ARTICLE #1- DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS ORDINANCE (#1) SECTION 100. DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS PROHIBITED. No person shall discharge any rifle, pistol, or other firearm in the city limits of the City of Brewer within an area that is bounded as follows: Portland Maine 14A.60.020 Discharge of a Firearm. A person conducting an athletic contest who fires blank ammunition toward the sky; 4. A person authorized to fire blank ammunition as part of military or police ceremonies; 5. A person authorized by permit of the Chief of Police to discharge blank ammunition for a lawful purpose; 6. Hunter safety instructors of the Oregon State Game Commission or their pupils who are engaged in hunter safety training classes sponsored by the Commission; 7. A police officer in the performance of official duty; 8. Employees or contractors of the Port of Portland engaged in flight safety hazard abatement at and around Portland International Airport to comply with FAR Part 139.337. I hate to be the killjoy on this thread. I can assure you I would be one of the first to step out with a firearm and dispatch the drone. However, This is one of many "Discharge of Firearms Ordinance" that I found specific to Maine. There has been many discussions about paintball and BB guns being included in the ordinance. I would be very interested in the outcome of you meeting. I'd be curious what the town officials and specifically the town lawyer say can and should be done. Michael "Esse Quam Videri"
  4. The deer hair that I have is THE most expensive material in my box. The hide and tail only cost me $3650 in repairs to my truck. Ties well though. Michael
  5. In a different direction of fly tying, I have seen it used on traditional bows, pens, tie clips, barrettes, and guitars. I suspect it would depend on how big it is. Michael
  6. Mikechell, Want to say "Thank You for this". Extremely twisted and funny! However, I'm trying to explain to my boss why I have soda stains on my mustache and down the front of my shirt. I just can't seem to find the words to say it is from the soda coming out my nose while watching this. So again, Thank You. Michael
  7. Brandon, This is the "Doulbe LX Bomber" I use on river smallies. I tie it on a 1/0 or a 2/0 wide gap hook. The Schlappen feathers that are palmered really come alive in the water. Michael
  8. Chuck, those are the same style that some use for Salmon. When I was tying commercially, I had some orders for Bombers, so decided to try them for SM. They're not a lot different than other deer hair flies popular for bass, so I tied them on 6, 4 & 2 size hooks. I'm sure they could be smaller or larger for targeting bass, depending on where your fishing, but these are the sizes I've used most. We have a tremendous "white fly" hatch in the area, & that white Bomber is perfect for that hatch. I've tied & used Waller Wakers, Glitter Bugs & that Pink Deer Hair Wog for SM too. Thanks so much Tidewaterfly. I was pleasantly surprised to see the bombers in your SMB arsenal. I often thought they might make good bass patterns and your post confirms it. Dead drifted or skated they provide a bold profile on top water and should make for some exciting action. Cheers. If I might add my two cents. One thing I have found with Bombers and Smallies, tie the palmered hackle using Schlappen Feathers. They ad a huge amount of movement the a Bomber when you let it sit. Michael
  9. I'll be give them a try. Thanks, Michael
  10. Question for both you guys, Do you find any need to add a bit of weight to the hook to keep it riding in the upright position or do you find it rides well without it? Michael p.s. definitely a fly I'll be tying for smallies and large mouths. I can even see it for stripers.
  11. Double XL Bomber in White and Chartreuse Michaael
  12. Good day Joseph, I have been working on some of Bergman's flies over the past few years. I can't say I am great at them but I am getting better. I truly enjoy tying them. Regrettably I did not have the opportunity to sign up in time for this swap. It is going to be awesome. I have just on request. Please post pictures of the end results. I would like to see what others have been able to accomplish. Sincerely, Michael
  13. Welcome Terry, From a fellow Mainiac! Michael
  14. ISEE, I couldn't agree more. The tails make a fantastic "Dark PTN". I have many of the in my box and they are extremely effective here. I just used the biots as a substitute for a spinner pattern I was trying. It makes an incredible segmented body. I can't wait to cast it. Alas we need to get rid of some ice and snow. Last nights 2 inches of snow isn't helping at all. Michael
  15. I'll add my two cents to this. Here in Maine it is clearly defined as two what constitutes a Fly and Fly Fishing waters. Fly (Artificial Fly): A single-pointed hook dressed with feathers, hair, thread, tinsel, or any similar material to which no additional hook, spinner, spoon or similar device is added. Fly Fishing: Casting upon water and retrieving in a manner in which the weight of the fly line propels the fly. No more than 3 unbaited artificial flies individually attached to a line may be used. (12654-A) (NOTE: It is unlawful to troll a fly in waters restricted to fly fishing only.) (12658) Now that being said, I do not know what the laws are in other States. However, I am quite sure that there would a ration if $#@^ you would take from the Game Warden for adding a split ring to a fly on Fishing Only waters. The Fly Fishing Only Waters I know of and have fished are on brookie and salmon waters. I do not see the need to have a split ring on my flies in these waters. Now I will add just a bit more. I can differently see the advantage of this on bass and pike waters or trolling flies. Although I am curious as to the effect a ring would have on a trolling fly. Just my thoughts. Michael
  16. Opened mine last night. Dido on the kudos for this swap. I am excited to see what the bass will do with these. Great looking group of flies. As far as being sick of winter... I cut a hole in the ice earlier this week. We still have 16 inches of blue ice, plus 18 inches of snow, on that pond. I'm thinking I'm a little bit away from casting into that water. April first will come and go with no expectation of wetting a line. Michael
  17. Thought I explain the name. Tail: white marabou and Red Fox Tail Under wing: Kangaroo hair Over wing: brown bucktail Michael
  18. I own the "FLY INDEX". That was the very first book I purchased back when I started tying. I still have it, although it is in a plastic bag now. The plastic binder is gone. Michael
  19. Two of my favorite books that I have enjoyed through my years of tying. I still reference them quite often. "Index of Orvis fly patters volume 1 and 2. These were produced in 1978 and 1987 respectively. You can find them at http://www.abebooks.com/ or www. alibris.com. Michael R. Earle

  21. Adam, Ever hitched your float tube to one of those salmon pens? That might get exciting. Although I suspect the excitement may come from kicking your way through those shipping lanes where the ferry goes. Michael
  22. There is one that I have enjoyed fishing and tying. The "Morrish Mouse" Michael
  23. Caught my first Salmon on this fly. That was a trip of a life time. Actually caught all four on it. Michael
