  1. I was looking at how many of us have read Steven King. I too have read many of his books. I also live within 15 miles of his house in Bangor Maine. Large house with a custom wrought iron fence in the front. The fence has bats, dragons and spiders on it. Pretty cool.

  2. I, unlike the rest of you, have the attention span of a Cocker Spaniel. So epic novels and I don't always get along.

A couple of writers I have got into these past years are Arthur Macdougall. He writes the Dud Dean series. I was given one for my 14th birthday that was signed by Mr. Macdougall. I have been looking in the used book store for years to find more. The other is Patrick McManus. Another writer that I find on occasion in the used book stores.

  3. Thanks Mikechell,

Looks like we're getting between 2 and 3 feet when all is said and done. Now that being said is also looks like it is going to be the fluffy kind. Should be easy to move around. My daughter just informed me that they have already calls off school tomorrow. Thinking the fireplace will get a workout.

  4. All set. The "Foxy Bou-roo" looks good. Tail of white marabou with an over lay of Red Fox Tail rootbeer flash with an under wing of kangaroo and an over wing of olive/green bucktail. size 4 and lead eyes.

The Roo is silky soft and seems to look good in water. However it is not very long. I didn't cut much after it was on the hook.

Hope everyone catches something huge on it... or anything that swims will work too.

    Look forward to an address.

  5. I just tried this, and it surpasses anything I have done with duck so far. It comes from Traeger Smokers receipt of the week.

    Enjoy,

    TRAEGER DUCK BALL POPPERS

    INGREDIENTS
    • (2) 4 ounce duck or chicken breasts
    • 12 pieces thin cut bacon
    • --Cheese Mixture--
    • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
    • 2 teaspoons onion powder
    • 3 jalapenos, seeded and diced small
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
    • --Dipping Sauce--
    • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
    • 1/4 cup olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 16 oz package of cream cheese

    PREPARATION

Starting with a piece of plastic wrap, cover the duck and pound it out to a ¼ inch thin piece, then cut it length wise into 3 pieces.

Place 1 teaspoon of the cheese mixture in each strip of duck and roll them up. Wrap each duck ball with one bacon strip, and refrigerate for 1 hour.

When ready to cook start the Traeger on smoke with the lid open until the fire is established (4-5 minutes). Set the temperature to 325 degrees and preheat, lid closed, for 10 to 15 minutes.

Place the duck poppers on the grill, cook them for 15 to 20 minutes or until the bacon is fully cooked. Serve them hot with the dipping sauce on the side.

Fair warning: If you are sensitive to salt, cut this is half or more. I found with the bacon and the salt in the cheese mix to be too much. Second batch was incredible.

p.s. I suspect this would be fantastic with most game meet. My next try is going to be with moose possibly turkey.

  6. Mine is a bit different, I was 17.

Mom was trying a new stuffing receipt with a wine base to it. Early Thursday morning I was waken to a large boom. I ran into the kitchen to find my Mom and Dad cleaning the floor and wall in front of the open oven door. There was stuffing three feet up the wall.

    OR

The next year Mom decided she wanted to raise a turkey. It became more of a pet than food. She told me that it was time to "take care of Peepers". Yes that was the name of the bird. I grabbed the ax and headed out to the pen. Mom comes into the pen and picks up the turkey. She cuddled and pet and talked to the bird.. She looks at me with doe eyes and says, it's all yours.and walks away. What do you do at that point?

  7. Retrocarp,

I feel your pain. I too have done this and everything else that has been posted. When I tie to replace my own, I am not as picky. However I was asked to tie a couple dozen flies and make them into earrings, I know I tied no less than 5 of each fly to get them "right". It had more to do with proportions but sometimes it was material not cooperating.

I'm not sure how many others are in my waters, I only tie 5 to 6 times a year. Usually for 4 to 5 days at a time.

  8. I'd recommend experimenting with any of the feathers. As it has been said, use both sides of the wing feathers. Older wet fly patterns call for duck wing quite often.

I am an avid duck hunter and have more feathers than I could ever tie with. i am always trying something different with then.

To add to SILKHDH: don't forget Hen mallards and black duck feathers. Great coloring on them.

Lastly, if your buddy has it in his heart, ask for the hole bird and slow roast the bacon wrapped breast with some basil and garlic powder.

  9. Eide,

First I want to chime in with everyone else... Amazing. You seem to have an eye for balance and symmetry that is closer to art than a utilitarian fly that some of us tie. I have only been doing this for 38 years. I figure if I am still tying in another 40 years I might be able to see flies the way you do. That is If I can still see to tie.

Please keep up the work you do so the rest of us have a benchmark to strive for.

  10. I can't find it. I was looking for a cartoon that has two fish, looking at a fly line in the water. One says to the other, "Wanna see a fly fisherman go nuts? Keep hitting the knot."

    Instead, I found these two.

    Mikechell,

The tree would be the funniest comic I have seen in my life... If it weren't so Friggin' true!!!

  11. OK, I've just betters the duck pizza,

Almost the same, however make the onions caramelized and change the duck for some ground venison and bacon.

I just stuffed myself foolish for lunch and all I want to do is take a nap.

  12. Great question. I am always curious what others like to do.

For me, I like being outdoors with my daughters. Paddling flat water and some whitewater. We get to waterski a couple times a year. Mostly I chase ducks and geese. Oh yes, building canoes and kayaks.

  13. Long car ride last weekend with my Girls. The subject of breathing in Helium and the effects on the vocal cords was discussed. This lead me to ask the question, "if you breath in too much Helium and ingest some of the gas, when you fart will it come out as a squeek?"

My wife had a look of disdain on her face while my daughters were trying not to cry with laughter.

Just the way my mind works on long rides.
