Hey Flywag, Those look great -- I especially like the wool head diver and the deer hair popper. Great gift!

snikosh, I'm in the same boat with you. I've tried tying with deer hair and just get miserable results. But I am determined to figure this out. I just got half of a mule deer hide ( I told myself I'd make a pile of bullet head hoppers ) but as soon as I got it I knew I'd be tying some spun hair 'cause I'd be tying the rest of my life making hoppers. Hope you work things out. I've been following the thread to keep up with the feedback you've received.

On the average, I tie about 8-10 hours a week. Most of my tying is not out of necessity; it's simply for the sheer fun of tying.

Thanks alot, everyone; I appreciate your help.

Been looking for some # 8 hooks with the eye turned up. I really didn't want to spend 14-18 bucks for some salmon hooks; all i'm going to be doing is tying some buggers. Saw one recently with an upturned eye and it really appealed to me. I've checked with Mustad and Eagle Claw and could'nt find any on their web sites. Thanks in advance for you help.

Welcome to the club. As several have already mentioned, the $700 is just the beginning. It gets so bad at times that you might have a pile of white marabou at home (more than you could ever use) and when your'e at a store or fly shop you see some on sale and pick up a couple of packs ..... just in case. Same with rods and reels ... you might have 3 5 wts. but you run across one on sale and get it just in case one of the others break. I've asked for nothing but fly "stuff" the past four years for my birthday and Christmas. My name is Greg, and I have a problem. I am getting in some deep poo and I don't see any way out. I love it!

Hey everyone, I'm new to the Forum and actually found a swap that was not filled. I love to fish for smallies, trout, and bluegill; this swap has me wondering what type of jig do you tie for a swap like this. If someone could maybe let me know what type of jig is expected I'll join if I'm capable. Been tying for about 5 years so I guess I'd be labeled an intermediate tyer. Maybe I'm just having a brain cramp but the only thing I can thing of, jig related, is a simple marabou jig with the chenille body/collar. If there is a page loaded with pictures/recipes I haven't found it. I'm not trying to be a pain .... I'm just way out in right field on this one. Thanks for any suggestions ... I'd be glad to join pending a decent pattern. Would it be ok to just create something out of ones imagination? Will the jig be fished on flyrods or spinning reels. I can't imagine casting a 1/4 oz. jig head on a flyrod. LOL

I've been tying furled leader for a while. You are correct in thinking they are not difficult to make. Once you get everything set up you can furl a leader in about 5-6 minutes. I have used mono thread, 2&4 lb. ordinary monofilament, polyester thread found at some of the biggers stores' sewing section, 6/0 and 8/0 Uni Thread. I've got probably 50 on hand tied in different colors and sizes. I given and traded alot of these and everyone who has used them really liked them. Good luck with your furling. Let me add .... I used an electric drill and a cordless drill on my first 15-20 leaders and I thought it was just too time consuming. I have a 2 speed Dremel tool that works fine as long as it's on the slow speed. You can furl each side of you leader in about 12-14 seconds.

Joined the FlyTyingForum today and wanted you to know a little bit about myself. My name is Greg and I live in the foothills of North Carolina. I've been flyfishing for about 5 years and I truly enjoy it. I started tying flies at the same time and I don't know which I enjoy more -- the tying or fishing. Probably fishing, but it sure is good to sit down and tie favorites or something totaly new. I've been married for 16 years and I have 3 children : 8, 6, and 6 months. I've been blessed with a wonderful family and we enjoy hiking, canoeing, tubing, and cooking out. My favorite fish to pursue is the smallmouth. I fish a river that's a couple of miles from my house that has alot of smallies in it. Late summer wading is my favorite approach, but floating the river in my canoe in the Spring or Fall is not too bad either. I have 3 small mountain streams (rivers) each about 1 hour from my house. I can usually get away once a month, sometimes twice, and I enjoy that as well. Looking forward to learning more about you and this great sport of flyfishing.
