Charlie Craven's book is $25 on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/Charlie-Cravens-Basic-Fly-Tying/dp/0979346029/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412212065&sr=8-1&keywords=charlie+craven ), if your interested. I have both Barr Flies and Charlie Craven's book. Charlie Craven is the one who tied the flies in John Barr's book, too. Recipes for the Copper John are the same.

Now that I have my copy of Barr Flies in front of me, I can tell you what John Bar recommends.
He uses black biots for the Chart., Blue, Black, Zebra (black and silver wire), Silver, Pink, and Green Copper Johns.
He uses white biots for the Wine Copper John.
He uses brown biots for the Red, Copper Brown, and of course the Orignal Copper Johns.

Look great to me.

You can use whatever color you want. I prefer black or brown.

Fisherboy,
The Traditional Adams above is tied based on a fly tied in an article in the summer 2014 issue of Fly Tyer magazine it was written by Dennis Potter and is titled "Tie the Perfect Adams". The fly in the article uses a half dozen or so GPT fibers and superfine dubbing. I have seen "Grandpa's Story". I found it very interesting; however, using only two or three GPT fibers for the tail just doesn't give the fly the "bang" I am looking for and although the "Grandpa's Story" version of the Traditional Adams uses wool for dubbing, I find that superfine dubbing is a much better material for dry flies than wool.
I can tell that you have a passion for fly fishing and tying especially for a young man as yourself, don't lose that. You have an excellent eye for detail.
Thank you for your compliments.

Thanks for the compliments. The size of cone depends on the size of the hook. I used a size 4 hook and a large or 1/4 inch cone.
