Articulated streamers: front hook or back hook?
Troutbum11 replied to LP ID 66's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Totally depends on the fish species and type of water. When I catch largemouth on articulated streamers they almost always take the back hook. But on the other hand... when I catch bigger browns in fast water, they seem to always take the front hook. That is also because I fish upstream for browns and the head is the first part they contact. In open water it seems that the fish stalk their prey more and take prey from behind, making a rear hook more preferable. These have been my observations, doesn't mean their right but hope it helps. -
Mine was a blue gill on a green weenie....not my first fly rod fish, but my first fish on a fly I tied...that was about 9 years ago and I was hooked! Thanks Grandpa!!

Troutguy- Only one wide gap hook at the head of the fly (Covered by marabou in the picture) most people join 2-3 hooks together but I tied it on a chain style spine made from some jewelry pins from a craft store, attached to the front hook. Kinda like the fish skull articulated "Fish Spines" but different, if that makes sense... The reason I tied it this way is because the river I will be fishing it on here in Maryland is a fly-only, single hook only regulated stream. Did some testing with other articulated patterns with multiple hooks and pretty much every fish (especially browns) were hooked by the first hook at the head of the fly. Browns like many predatory fish are programed to eat head first so I think it should work well. Only one way to find out though! This pattern has much more movement than the traditional articulated (Multiple Hook) streamers, but it took considerably longer to tie.

I was kicking around some new ideas for brown trout streamers today and when I left the vise this is what I had. It has 4 articulations with 5 individual body segments and with a wide gap hook at the head. overall 7in long. This wont catch little fish, haha.....I have a pretty good feeling about this one...

Look up Staton Kline's "homewrecker". Its an EP fiber fly made to imitate trout. Pretty simple really, but deadly. Double articulated with up to three hooks. It will be in cabelas this fall. You can make it what ever size you want.

Any suggestions about the best place online to by EP fibers for tying baitfish streamers?

What's your favorite part of fishing?
Troutbum11 replied to mikechell's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
Like others have said, fishing is an escape for me. Allows me to clear my mind and focus on the challenge at hand... fooling a fish with some hair and feathers. Nothing else like it in the world! -
- yeah they do. She's the first girl I've taught and she has definitely surprised me.

My girlfriend (A new Fly fisher of this year) went fishing for some brook trout in a small tributary creek here in Md. We have and awesome day! She caught some very respectable fish and out fished me in terms of quality fish for sure! First year she every fly fished and she's already out fishing me...and on flies she tied! Both fish pictured are hers.... Gotta love it!

These were tied on a Cabelas curved scud style hook #22.

That Shrimp/ scud pattern is pretty sweet! what did you use for the body? Epoxy or maybe hot glue?

Thanks for the comments. Like I said these are my first attempts so they can only get better. Thanks again!

Just started tying midges for the first time. Any advice on hook style/models for these little guys would be great! Below are my first attempts...

Nice! I am really into wood working as well. I make laminated trout nets and longbows. I'll have to give this a go...
