  1. Those are exceptionally nice flies. As Chugbug said, the flash colors of the collar blend so very nicely and subtly with the hare's ear, it makes you do a double take. Probably the same reaction from a trout. Very nice.
  2. Very nice, quiet video. Thank you for not including banjos.
  3. A lot of people who work in Chicago don't live there. In fact, a lot of people who work in Chicago don't even live in Illinois. Sounds like you would be doing yourself (and your family) a favor if you moved.
  4. I can only speak for a Safari browser. Go to the top of the page when Safari is open. There is a category for "Bookmarks". Click on that and approximately five items down from the top it will say "Add Bookmark." Click on that and a dialog box will appear with the title of the article (which you can edit if you want to). It will also let you choose where, or what heading you want to save it under. At the bottom of the dialog box is a button for "Add". Click the button and it is saved. I think it is similar on most browsers. Hope this helps.
  5. Statistics show that 90 - 100 people a year die from bee stings. It has been estimated that 7,000–8,000 people per year receive venomous bites in the United States, and about five of those people die. Most fatal bites are attributed to the eastern and western diamondback rattlesnake. wikipedia
  6. That is a very nice bit of work, but I thought your name was Tom!?!
  7. If you use a fly on a Tenkara line, and cast the fly to your target, is that not fly fishing by the accepted definition? If you're dapping only, then maybe it isn't fly fishing. But that makes the cast (rather than the line and lure) the defining principle of fly fishing. By extension, are you still fly fishing if you dap with a conventional rod/reel set up? Not really trying to argue, but when I went out with a very well respected Tenkara guide, we cast the line every time, never just dapped. The fly was a Parachute Adams, so the line delivered the fly. I can understand not liking Tenkara (it is not my cup of tea either) but I am trying to understand why someone would claim it is not fly fishing.
  8. No point in beating around the bush. Since many of you know the true definition of fly fishing, will you please share that knowledge?
  9. Did you grow up in northern Indiana?
  10. Thanks for the snarkiness Mike. I am beginning to realize it is part of "charm" of this site. This is the second time I have been insulted in a total of 13 posts on this site. If this is the norm I am perfectly capable of joining in. I would suggest that maybe you should shut off the TV but I think the damage is already done. Obviously you have no idea of what you are talking about if you think Gamakatsu hooks are $2.00 each.
  11. I just started tying saltwater flies. So far I have only tied the Clouser. I bought some Ganakatsu SC 15 hooks in a few different sizes. I would like to take advantage of the J. Stockard sale on Gamakatsu hooks, but they show so many variations I really don't know what to get. I have no problems or complaints with the SC 15 hook, but are there other hooks I should consider for other flies? I fish mostly from shore, on the Southeastern coast. (NC _Florida and the Florida panhandle). I would welcome some recommendations from you guys with experience. I am using an 8wt rod and line if that makes any difference.
  12. A lot of shops with machines have a no beard, no long hair policy. Take a moment to think about what it would be like to lean over a spinning lathe and have your beard get caught in the mechanism. That is not a fantasy scenario. I had a friend who worked in a furniture factory. The feed for the saw caught his shirt sleeve. Two seconds later his hand was laying in the dust bin. These types of accidents are all too common in the manufacturing world. Edited to add: I am very sorry to hear about this terrible behavior from others. I sincerely hope you can remove yourself and your family from your tormentors. This type of bully behavior is all too common and needs to be stopped.
  13. Flytire, thank you for the proportion chart. That is the most concise and informative explanations I have ever seen.
  14. You can buy a set of "close-up lenses" that will screw into the filter threads of your Nikon. They are like contact lenses for your camera. They come in a set of three (+1, +2, +4) and they can be stacked for more magnification. A set should cost about $30.00 USD.
  15. Like virtually no one else, I never fished until I was 64! However, my grandson has been fishing since he could walk. When our daughter and the kids came to live with us, Nathan (then 7 years-old) would ask me to take him fishing. I had never fished. No one in my family fished. But, I would take Nathan and watch him. It was obvious that just fishing (worms, corn, chicken liver) made him happy. When he did catch something, which was often, I saw pure joy. After about two years, and as a way to keep him close, I asked Nathan if he would teach me how to fish. That started it. About 18 months ago my wife was asked to participate in a Casting for Recovery program. She used to throw worms as a kid with her grandpa, and really took to fly fishing. So, to be with her I decided to try the fly. I like it much better than spinner casting. Now i am teaching Nathan a little bit, though we both realize we fish for different reasons. So, I have been fishing for just a little more than two years.
  16. I recently bought a lot of fly tying materials from a gentleman who was retiring. Included were six bobbins of varying sizes. One is quite short with a very narrow tube, another is longer/larger but also has a narrow tube. A couple have quite wide tubes. What is the proper use of the different sizes of tubes and frames? Thanks in advance.
  17. Tell me you're kidding! I just used your post to convince my girlfriend to buy me a Law vice for my birthday, since I want to start tying flies this winter. Now I feel kind of silly.
  18. Those are truly awesome pieces of Damascus steel. Nice fly too.
  19. SiiverCreek I have read your response (and many of your other excellent posts.) One of the things I have always enjoyed about working and talking with educated people is the ability to discus issues where they disagree without dragging a lot of personal baggage into the conversation. Since I have been firmly disinvited to participate in this thread I will simply say, one and done.
  20. This is probably the wrong place to wade in with my first post, so, based on two other comments I have deleted it.
