  1. It depends. Mostly I mean it as hand made in small quantities, in reference to fly tying and rod wrapping. Sometimes I mean it as in being artis-anal, or anal about the arts in the sport. :) Thanks. I did feel welcome from post 1.
  2. Wait a minute, wasn't cyan the greek word for blue...?
  3. So... There is this farmer trying to milk his cow, but the cow is restless and keeps kicking the pale, milk and all. The farmer ties the leg of the cow to a post in the barn, but the cow keeps kicking with the other leg and then knocking the pale over with the tail. So he ties up the other leg and finally decides to use his own belt to tie the tail up to the rafters. As he stretches to reach up, from his stool, behind the cow, his loose pants fall down just as the wife comes in the barn. "Can you explain to me what you are doing...???" The farmer thinks about it... "Well, if I tell you the truth, you ain't gonna believe it, so... I WAS SCREWING THE COW...!!!"
  4. Not one for too many social graces, but here we go... Transplant from Spain to SE Florida, me love fishing long time, yadda, yadda, yadda... Tinkerer by nature, started "artisanal" fishing about ten years ago. Mostly inshore then, mostly freshwater now. Signed up about two years ago. Been lurking until recently. Here to keep learning from a bunch of people that tie much prettier flies than I do, and others who don't, but at least get a lot more time on the water. Cheers, Bimini15
  5. Thanks for the link. My own search took a really strange direction. It turns out there are things sicker that simply skinning a cat, not in the US... http://m.liveleak.com/view?i=f68_1356616976
  6. As long as this is taking a turn for the linguistic... I have heard this countless times since I moved to the US. I want to know exactly how many ways there are, and who came up with them, you bunch of sickos...!!!
  7. Not to get too technical with scientific names or anything, but I think that fish is a Pequeño Centropomus Undecimalis...
  8. The tool is a vise, fly tying is a vice, so... close enough for me.
  9. Errr... How do you unsubscribe from a thread?
  10. I look at these threads, and I have ideas which someone else explains in the next post. So I think I am an ok tier, I can do that, and then I realize you are tying in sizes 18 to 24. Thanks though, I enjoy the threads and they give me something to look forward to.
  11. I wonder if riding low like that also may give it some side to side action. Any observations?
  12. There is something wrong with the photo rendering engine as well. Every fly I post looks horrible...
  13. Let it go... The whole thing is kind of tragic, really. Love the fly. What is the tail piece made out of? Trying to make my own if at all possible. And what is your thought on using UV resin instead of hot glue? Thanks
  14. So, I can honestly say I haven't ever tied a Clouser Minnow. First, no lead for me. So I am disqualified right there. No cross wraps behind the eyes either. Also no red eyes, but mostly yellow, which I paint myself. And yet, my biggest bass ever on fly fell for one of these bastards. Stupid bass...! Glad to see the thread is back on friendlier terms.
  15. I saw it in the closeout/discount/bargains site: http://www.flytyingbargains.com/FlyTyingBargains3.htm
  16. If the color is right, can't beat the closeout marabou at FTD.
  17. I guess it depends on the variations. If you wrapped it with flat waxed nylon, that is a Mummy Clouser Minnow. If you used copper wire, that is a Padaung Long Neck Clouser Minnow, and so on... Just kidding. Simply call it "my version of a Clouser minnow" and noone can tell you anything.
  18. By definition, Lefty's way is THE way to tie Lefty's deceivers. Yes, you can tie variations of it, but they will not be Lefty's deceivers, just deceivers. Just like you may have a favorite brand of champagne, but, no matter how good it is, if it is not made in Champagne, with grapes from the region and following the Champagnois method, it really is not champagne.
  19. McFly, next time you do a video, follow the variant strategy, plus explain why you felt the need to create such variant. That is an addition to the conversation that anyone would welcome and it would preempt quite a bit of the purist outrage. Just an idea.
  20. Perhaps using too many fibers at once?
  21. For crabs, I would just use rug yarn. As for the waste, a little is expected. A lot may be in the way you handle the material. Slipping and sliding: I found that doubling fibers over on the thread to help anchoring them on the right spot worked well for me, with a couple of wraps right on the fibers bend, to anchor all the fibers, and the tiniest drop of superglue before moving to the next hank.
  22. Exactly, Mike. Flats, I would still try Congo just because it is so much cheaper, which I will do myself, but my guess is that tying with one or the other is not so different. If you give us details on your issues we may be able to help. At your age, I can't think of many things about which you can truly say "it is just too difficult for me". It probably is just a matter of practice.
