  1. FlaFly- I actually considered that, too. But, then I wondered if the scent would deter fish? One of the fishing guru's that taught me how to fly fish told the guys in my class to wipe their hands really well before tying their flies to the leader because some scientific study showed that the oils repelled fish?

Anyone else heard this? I mean, I should be good, since I'm a girl and all, but it made me curious.

  2. I'm a tad late to this discussion, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who has ever looked at their pet and thought "Man... That fur would be great on a fly somewhere!"

Good to know there are other crazies out in the world! :)

I'm not entirely sure my black, long-haired cat will let me anywhere near him with scissors, though...

  3. Thanks for the camera tips. I was in a big hurry when I was taking those photos. Sadly, I was about to leave for a funeral and was trying to do something to pass the time and keep my mind off of what was to come while the rest of my family finished getting ready.

I will remember those tips next time I take photos of them.

    Thanks, again.

  4. Okay, not sure how many pictures I can post at one time, but here it goes. Tell me what you think. Some of these are truly experiments (see the post about the turkey feathers). Try not to laugh too hard, okay, guys? :)

Also, I apologize for the bad quality of some of the pictures!

  5. Hi, Mike!

Haha, I was actually discussing fishing with a couple guys from work the other day (I swear, its a wonder my boss didn't yell at me for talking as long as we did...), but one of the guys was asking if I had used any that I had tied yet. Um, no... I worked too hard on that first one to risk losing it! Sentimental, ya know?

I will definitely be posting some pictures here in the next day or so. I tied a fancy looking foam bug yesterday (and I'm only saying it was fancy because of the sparkly foam), but sadly, I must've clipped my line too close to my knot when I tied it on, because I lost it after a few casts. :(

As for the mentor question. Like I said, I had to take a PE class in order to graduate college and I figured since I was an environmental major, fly fishing would most likely get me outdoors, as opposed to something else, like ballroom dancing. So, the teacher that taught the class (who is also the ballroom dance teacher), I suppose, you could say is my mentor. I've been emailing and sending him pictures like a mad woman. He's probably going to regret letting me in the class... He's only given me a few suggestions on some flies I could tie with the meager supplies I have at the moment. Other than that, I've been freestyling, more or less. That's actually why I said, the first few flies I tied looked pretty bad. I didn't have a recipe, just making it up as I go.

Thanks, again, Mike! Nice to "meet" you!

  6. Thanks, guys!

FlyFishin'Jam- I have every intention of tying a muddler's minnow. My fishing buddy suggested I tie that one, but sadly, my daddy didn't kill a deer this past deer season, so I don't have any extra fur laying around just yet and I haven't come across anything good in the dozens of craft boxes yet to improvise. I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled for roadkill, I guess.

utyer- That's so helpful! I actually have a couple of each of those feathers you listed, not a lot of the under feathers, though.

Fisherboy0301- I'll have to keep that in mind, thanks!

  7. Hey, everyone.

I recently got into tying flies and fly fishing and once my cousin found out about it, he sent a slew of wild turkey feathers my way. Does anyone know of any fly recipes that use mainly turkey feathers? Whenever I google it, I keep getting websites on how to cure the feathers and that's not exactly what I'm looking for....

    Thanks a bunch in advanced!

  8. Hello fly fishers from all parts of the world!

As you can see, I'm pretty new. I actually just started fly fishing about 2 and a half months ago. I was required to take a PE class for my college curriculum, and I've been hooked ever since signing up for a fly fishing course. I've even made a couple of flies to get started, too. I have a feeling I'm going to be asking a lot of questions, so do apologize in advance!

    Glad I found this site!
