  1. Fair enough, I get it. I might just use it as a chance to practice tying more flies and experimentation. The scaplin was next on my list to learn so, I guess it's me, fly vise, and NCAA on the TV tonight. I'll be fishing for smallies in the James River, in Virginia. Thanks for the input.
  2. Hello everyone, I recently started tying Clouser minnows and after about the fourth one and consistently reviewing a video I was using as a guide I got them down pretty well. But, I was thinking about doing a Mad Tom version of a Clouser Minnow. I researched that fly, but all seem to be with rabbit as the body material. Has anyone tried a Clouser Minnow, but with some rubber legs at the front of the fly to mimic the mad tom whiskers? That was more the angle I was thinking, remove the flash and put some rubber legs up there. Thoughts, comments? Wdy
  3. ^^ yeah, I tried the same thing then she got curious about tying. But, she enjoys it and I do not give opinions on what she ties soo, that keeps the peace.
  4. ^^^ yeah, that was my next evolution to this fly, to tie the rubber legs in knots to appear jointed, but I am still having getting the proportions proper.
  5. Hey everyone, I sat around and came up with this crawfish pattern, nothing revolutionary, but I am looking for some suggestions to improve it. The fly is weighted, wire wraps, but I have acquired some lead eyes, small ones to attach closer to the eye of the hook. I thought about double wrapping the chenille, I think I will be doing that on my next iteration of this pattern. The tail is something obvious I need to address, but looking for suggestions here to make this a better pattern. Thanks everyone,
  6. ^^^^ Yep Sir, You hit it right on the head, I was fixing to start tying some San Juan worms. I'm teaching my wife to tie flies and fly fish, and I am not a very patient person, hahah So, I was going to get her started on making some of these to get her confidence up and the whole snowball effect. Thank you everyone!
  7. Hey, I am sorry to ask a very basic question, but what is the difference between Vernille and Chenille? I have an inkling that Vernille is micro chenille, but I figured I would pose the question here. Thanks, Wdy
  8. ^^^ Thanks, I was born with a problem and now it needs to be addressed.
  9. Ok, thanks for all the suggestions guys. I do like the marker approach, that way I can get some completed to fish with first. I am having a nasty surgery coming up soon and will be down for about 4 months minimum so, I'm in a hurry to get something completed and in the water.
  10. yes, I was looking at the Chenille when tying it and thinking something was wrong. The materials were the same size, medium, but I think they just sat for so long that the chenille was just permanently flat-ish. I know that does not make sense. That is a size 4 hook, 2x. 6/0 thread, only thread size I have at the time. (An order is coming for 3/0.) I have the almost same problem with Montana nymphs, spacing the two chenilles with the hackle. Wdy
  11. Rick, I'll try it. Thanks for the suggestion,
  12. Hello everyone, I am having trouble with tying a BC nymph. I can not get the weave correct. I wrap the black Chenile over the top of the hook, then wrap the orange chenile over that, then wrap the black to the other side, wrap organge chenille, rinse and repeat. Below is the my best attempt, the hackle is a little messed up, but I am sitting around waiting for surgery, do not work now and trying to pick this great hobby back up. Maybe I am not pulling the chenilles tight enough, or something else. I am going to be using these for smallmouth. Any help is greatly appreciated! Wdy
  13. Hello everyone, This is Woody from RVA. I used to tie flies a long time ago, back in high school, but stopped because of lack or resources. Now, with all the Youtube channels and needing something to do between surgeries I am getting back into it. Got some new fly reels and looking to get back into fly fishing once I'm able to again. So, I searched Google and here I am. Looks like a great resource so far! Thanks, Wdy
