That's the weird part, they have not been trimmed. The tips feather down almost like a turkey flat but not that soft. But goose may be the answer. Back to the research.

Hey Y'all. Does anyone know what type of feathers these are. They are very stiff almost like what you would find on a dart or arrow but not that big. I have seen them before but can't place them. I ended up with three sacks of grey, black and white feathers that I found in a sale. They are very symmetrical and do not look to be dyed. Thanks in advance

I saw this pop up on my email notifications and although I can not see the top of my desk............. There are so many good ones but if I had to pick one, The Benchsid Introduction, as mntioned in he earlier post, would be it. I found when starting that I needed a few books as they all had somehing different and explained it in a way that they melde together. I also have a lot of books I will never open again. Not bad, but not worth it. I learn a lot visually, so You Tube for me is the way to go.

Start with the States rules and regulations.

What would you do to improve beginners fly fishing books.
dontheo replied to Dirts's topic in Beginner's Corner
I would have the next chapter, after tying a wolly bugger or some other pattern, on how to fish it. This being a digital book, thanks to mikechell, one can not get the next chapter until they fished it and caught something. There is nothing like catching a fish on your first fly. -
I don't like anything around my neck. If its too hot for a vest go to shirts and shorts with large pockets. My glasses will have a lanyard around them but if iam wearing them I don't feel the friction.

Try to pick up an auction on the bay for some vintage feathers. You can buy them for next to nothing and the quality, for wet flys, we're a lot better. Less fluff and garbage. I also like full skins.

I wouldn't want to damage my scissors or I might try it. Just looking at my desk, right now, I can also see five jars of Sally Hansons, a dyna king cement container that contains something, and a fresh quart of lacquer I picked up at home depot for some reason. I can see a tube of rtv silicon for some purpose I must have had in mind at one time, and behind that one of those multi packs of super glue. The sad part is I rarely use head cement. The Don

What is your favorite fly to tie to warm up with?
dontheo replied to FlyTieDad's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Inversion never believed in practice so I'll go that route. I view it like letting a wine breath, which is just a good waste of drinking time. Actually, at most, I only tie 5or 6 flies in a sitting. -
You have to mix things up once in awhile. So I cleaned my tying desk. Lol. I found stuff I have been looking for since the fall. Man do I own a lot of scissors. I still would not get rid of any but I counted 22 first class scissors. I hope I am not becoming a hoarder.

I had a hard time with dubbing them at first. But they are meant to catch fish and not win awards. I have also tied them with silk dubbing but scruffy is the best.
-
Try coffin furs. They have good quality material.. Do you mean limited success in tying them? It takes awhile to get the technique down. It's all in the hair. If you get a chance, look at Fran Betters book on tying. He invented the "Usual" which is the snowshoe rabbit pattern and the "Haystack" which is we're the comparadun came from. Type in the usual and haystack on you tube. While you are at it, type his name in too. He was an upstate NY boy too.

Looking for hooks like the tiemco tmc 2488 smaller than 26
dontheo replied to JimCoraci's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Hans: That is a very nice tie. I don't think the 2488 goes down to a thirty two? I love tying small and have good succes with them, the hard part is tying them on on the water, at least for me. lol What kind of camera do you use? I have a Nikon D3100 but I use for work and long distance work. I pray every day that I don't get another hobby, like cameras. Ted. . -

I never liked the 32 Tiemco. They had such wide gaps. I am still in search of some blind eye mustad 277, size 32 to use as rod inlays. -
Wow, I feel like a kid in a candy store. Things don't look good on the Gulf with the storm stalled. Texasg: how did it go? We're you able to slip away and get a hook wet? You all did an outstanding job. Tex, thanks for hosting and give me a holler in the fall and we can CHECH out the Guadalupe. I have had good luck with a res San Juan worm. Of course, it's nice to know the stocking schedule. Lol

I just gave both Labs a bath today and when i do they immediately shed when I get them dry. I got out my brush and have a pile of the softest underfur, kind of yellow with a reddish tint to it. Plus I have to very happy dogs.

What music do you listen to while fishing?
dontheo replied to Bubba_Da_Man's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
Endemic: No one could absorb all that you do from your surroundings. I think the closest I ever came to that was jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. It was so quiet that another sense kicked in. That didn't last long though. There is also nothing wrong with a little cane pole and a beer once in awhile. lol Actually I quit drinking about 6 years ago. But I still will toss a worm once in awhile. -
I noticed that Ihpones and Ipads are not supported 100%. I think it is the "Flash" player which is not supported by my Mac devices. I love the Ipad, once I picked it up I fell in love. I never thought I would use a Mac device, ever, for anything. Now my Ipad is with me all the time. On the job, it makes me look like I know wht I am doing when I don't have a clue. lol

De-Bonaire Captain Rick Soule (His picture too) I like this fly because it is light and easy to throw all day without wearing out an old man in the Texas heat. It rides upside down so there is no need for a weed guard. Cast over weed beds or tailing fish. Strips are 4-6 inches, no more, even 2 inches. Due to the small and eyes palmered hackle, it does not sink fast. Try it over a hole when blind casting says Soul. Mustad 34007 #4 Dark or Light Tan Thread Extra small unpainted dumbbell eyes Krystal Flash White Grizzly Hackle White Saddle Hackles Paint Eyes to your Color Cap likes to build the body up with gel or some type of coating. I keep it smaller and more streamlined (lighter). Though it is well saturated with Sally's TxDisc: You keep an eye on those skys. Clouds come and it will go to raining on you, Texas style.
-
Wish I was going too. But I just got the bearings in on the tractor so the lawn is out of control. If you want it to rain, just break the mower and have it down for a few weeks.

Holy Cow. You guys put mine to shame! The Don

This is going to sound crazy but cheap sandals, like from wallmart, would be what would work perfectly. The colors are all there too. I also source some electronics from China. I use Global Sources. Just do a search. Never had a problem with anything that they sourced for me. The biggest problem is the constant emails wanting you to buy more. Good luck, with that much production it sounds like you might find a company that can sell quantity to you.

Tee The 9lb is the density and the 9% will determine how well it will float. Where were you buying it from and did it have a specific name and color. Ted
-
That did it. Sorry I had to try myself. Type in EVA 9% to ypur search. This would be on the lower end of the spectrum of the amount of acetate used. Think of acetate as hard plastic that does not float like a CD case. I would be interested to see how you fashion it or make the popper shape. In Texas it's a lot of bass. I am going to do a little demo for our scouts and then have a fishing tournament in a stocked lsmall lake. Plenty of room for casting. lol Ted
