And hey, its just about summer!! Looking forward to 80 degree mornings. Glad to hear you're doing better.

Get well soon, Mike! Best wishes from your pal Flats

Bob, thank you for the very detailed response - it is deeply appreciated! Going to try and follow one of the outside tracks you mentioned and take it step by step. I knew about the oysters, but not the coral. Definitely something to watch out for especially in our older mavericks... As you said, flamingo is extremely forgiving. Was easy enough to learn where I could (and couldn't) go, usually when we got stuck or whatnot we were able to pole out of it. Only once did we have to wait for the tide to come in.

Biscayne nights - Everglades days, 7 Feb
FlatsRoamer replied to Capt Bob LeMay's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Great report, Bob! I was there last Sunday as well and ended up catching a couple reds and several triple tail on the pots. Would love to get out after them this weekend, but unfortunately, I've got to work on my boat and fix some things! Definitely interested in hearing how your next trips will play out... By the way, we ended up finding plenty of shrimp at Bear Cut, and only a couple at Venetian. Didn't fish anywhere else... that night -

Utyer - Matter of fact, I am not! Have caught several in the glades, all around 5 lbs, but still plenty of fun. Looking forward to trying for some bigger fish this year... For peacocks, you can't beat a clouser. Size 4-1/0, bright colors, and heavy are the ticket. Bright colors seem to attract them the most. IF you are so kind as to send me some fox, I would indeed greatly appreciate it. However, of course, I will provide funding for the shipping!

I like the body on the light swamp fox. Did you just do 2 clumps of fox on top and bottom? Also, where do you buy your fox?

Senyo’s Laser Dub substitute at FTD...?
FlatsRoamer replied to Mike West's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
You could also comb out acrylic yarn then mix in ice dub and get basically the same thing... FTD has cool stuff for great prices. I would also recommend starburst dubbing. -
If it makes all you guys stuck in snow feel any better, the day before yesterday, yesterday, AND this morning I had shots at bonefish... haha! Merry Christmas -Flats

People would be surprised by how good fishing is close to ramps... tends get overlooked. Good man no complaints! Just spent today and yesterday on the water, with some shots at bones. No cigar but hey man I'm not complaining!

Hey Steve hope you're doing well man. Good to hear all is well. Whereabouts did you fish in the glades? Probably my favorite place to fish nowadays...
-
For bonefish, the majority of the time you are sight fishing them in pretty shallow water. The bottom there is mostly sand, making it extremely easy to see fish. I guess you could blind cast, but I would find some deeper water or a flat next to a channel on a moving tide. Make sure to bring a variety of patterns in sizes 4-8, as well as some different weights. The flies you described are perfect, no reason to to with something else. Make sure to use a fairly light tippet (12lb fluorocarbon being my favorite) and a tapered leader for the best casting performance.

I would definitely recommend renting a car... Also, invest in Rod Hamiltons DIY Bonefishing book. It highlights pretty much every spot on the islands (as well as many other places) and the secrets behind them. I think the online version cost 10$, so worth it... For flies, they aren't too picky lol. Any kind of gotcha or Charlie variation should work. I used a size 6 spawning shrimp pattern with medium bead chain eyes. Usually schooling fish but you will see the double digit fish in doubles, usually.

I was there this past summer, actually didnt fish in Provo, spent all our fishing time in North Caicos. Theres a ferry that will take you there, and it is honestly completely worth it. You bring the family and enjoy the beaches (Bambarra was our favorite). Also good fishing everywhere you see the flats. If you can rent kayaks at bottle creek, highly recommended, then cross the channel and experience a world class bone fishery. Just make sure to call ahead and ask in advance. Can also find bonefish all along the causeway between north and middle Caicos... make sure to buy the DIY Bonefishing book as it highlights pretty much every spot and its good and bad tides... I didnt really enjoy Provo all too much, wayyyy too touristy for me. North Caicos was the place for me, mostly locals (nicest people you'll ever meet) and we only saw a handful of tourists for a week. The kind of stuff you read about in Jimmy Buffett books. Good luck with your trip and please ask any more questions!

Yep that would be a bonefish... and they are quite the sport fish. We can fish year-round, no such thing as snow or ice or even winter for that matter down here in sunny South Florida Will upload some more pics when I get a chance

Heres an example! My dad caught this yesterday (on fly)

WOW!! Thanks for sharing these amazing pictures. I will always prefer the salt, but Alaska is definitely a dream destination. Nicely done!

Thanks for sharing, and will do! Also, have you looked into Tail Fly Fishing Magazine? Strictly a saltwater fly-fishing fly magazine, and based in Miami I believe. The hard copies of the magazines are pricey (but quality), however the online versions of the magazines are free (last time I checked)... -
Some nice reds on fly a week back or so.
