  1. Freshwater statewide $23 + $23 trout stamp, if you just want to fish in your area (city, county) it's $18 saltwater is extra/more but I don't remember how much https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/regulations/licenses/
  2. generally I release them, though they stocked a private pond (Izak Walton league) after I got back I put a grocery bag on the counter, near the sink and my wife says "I don't want any live fish on my counter!" (she's mostly vegetarian) I laughed and said "it's not alive!" (I only kept 1, for myself)
  3. My searches have not come up with anything. Maybe too broad a topic. When you cast a foam type fly, grasshopper type for example, how do you get them to land right instead of upside down or something? Just luck?
  4. I haven't fished SML yet, there aren't many places to that from shore, that i have found anyway. People with boats are nuts on that lake btw. The rivers and creeks are generally difficult to access if not down right dangerous, then there's all the over hanging trees etc. Carvins cove looks like it would be a great place to fish, either it's not very good or everyone keeps it a secret.
  5. I got these for less than $10 they work well, although the lens fits pretty tight not sure how long the clip would last swapping out the lenses, but the light is a nice feature https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005VIG6TA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  6. I use to have cichlids in an aquarium, do they tear up your flies more than the native species? after you coat them with the epoxy do they still have some flex to them or they rock hard?
  7. yeah I see people using shell casings as well in different calibers and even bending one side to make it oval, there are many of us who are symmetrically challenged so we need patterns/templates, was messing around with Microsoft word shapes and came up with this for those who need it like I do. shapes.pdf
  8. I have found similar posts on various fishing forums with the common request from people looking for patterns or templates to cut out foam. Many free form and do it by hand, other purchase the punches and or stencils that are available. Then there's those who want to do everything the hard way (like myself) for whatever reason they may have. So I would encourage those who want to go this route to look at everyday items for templates and patterns.
  9. thanks guys that helps a lot, while I look at the patterns and tutorials etc I have this issue of wanting to know why and how things work lol like most of you I like to modify and or create my own versions and experiments but generally there's a few "rules" you need to follow to make sure everything functions as it should, so with these being so light I could see an issue with them being upside down, but not really knowing if they would self correct.
  10. great idea I can't freehand either and have lots of paper clips in various sizes, more importantly using wire as a pattern has so many possibilities.
  11. So I'm learning to cast in the back yard, tried to tie a few foam flies, but I was wondering with the foams do they land upside down or is the hook heavy enough to make them land properly? talking about a foam with a size 6 or 8 hook.
