  1. Last night I started playing around with Muddler Minnows, trying to imitate Don Gapen's original, sparse style.  Last two pictures for reference are originals tied by Mr. Gapen and found on the Global FlyFisher website.

I'm not quite there, I should probably keep photos of the originals in front of me while I'm tying.

  2. Sorry for your loss, Mark.

I have had two relatives pass away in the past week, one just last night, and we cannot hold wakes or funerals because of the Wuhan Flu restrictions.  It's frustrating, as gathering with friends and family is what gets us through these hard times.

  3. Around 25 years ago, in my roving days, I spent about 2 months in Tuscon, working until I had enough money to keep moving.  I wasn't real impressed with the city, but i rather enjoyed the desert/countryside, hiking, camping, the old Indian ruins and such.  It was quite the change from the New England climate where I grew up.  I did some primitive camping on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon a few times.  I would go back there for that, if I could.

I visited the gem show in Quartsite, AZ at the time.

Anybody know why one would sell under three different names?

I'm not sure, maybe because not all negative feedback is warranted, would be my guess.  He'll have a fallback account.

I sell maybe one or two things a year, but buy off eBay at least once per month, 70% of which are fishing and tying related.

But I agree with tidwater.  Caveat emptor, as they used to say in Rome.  You do have to be selective from whom you buy, check there feedback, see what else they're selling and have sold in the past.  And of course, there are some tying related things I won't buy through eBay.  But the buyer protections in place, which I have only had to use once, are pretty good.  The few other problems that have come up have been handled promptly by the sellers without the need to get anyone else involved.  For alot of these sellers (I assume) this is their livelihood, or part of it, and they want a happy buyer and the repeat business.  Some of the sellers I use will occasionally throw in a free sample of something with a purchase, and not because I'm a returning customer.  I'm a returning customer because they were thoughtful enough to do it on my first purchase.

I know alot of people say support local shops, but really that's not always practical or warranted.  My closest I visit maybe once every 6 weeks, is only 30 minutes away, and is operated out of the basement of the guy's home.  The only reason I know he's there is I purchased something from him on eBay, and noticed the location.  Now I visit his shop whenever I need to, but some things I need he doesn't have (I don't buy his hooks, or his lines)  He also does awesome rod repair and refinishing, at great prices.  The next closest shop is 75 minutes away.  This is a big, big store.  The last and only time I was in there, the customer service was appalling, and this in the middle of a week day when there might have been 2 other customers.  Frankly, I won't miss him if he goes out of business.  Then there are two shops at least 90 minutes away that I have never visited.  I live 5 minutes from some of the best fly fishing in the my state.  Hmmm, 3 hours in the car for those feathers and bucktail, or 5 minutes on eBay and 3 hours fishing.  Easy peasy decision there.  eBay is actually the reason I started tying.  I got a great deal from someone selling their tying supplies and equipment, alot of which I still use today.

  5. That's a great video Mark, looks like time well spent, really beautiful.

It reminds me of the time in the mid-90's, I spent a few months driving up to Alaska from the East Coast.  I had never caught a Grayling before that, but I fished whenever I stopped near a stream on my way up, and was rewarded with fresh Grayling for dinner most every time.  As I remember, it was a nice eating fish, especially fresh from the water over a fire.

will it eat the wood, HA?

Not the wood, but will probably take off any finish that's on the wood.

Its the basic ingredient in most nail polish removers, but you have to read the labels as some nail polish removers are non-acetone.  A product called "Good-Off" is also pretty good for removing stuff like that, you can get it at Wal-Mart around here.  I think it is also acetone based, but at a higher concentration than nail polish remover.

  7. Ah, well.  I wasn't going to join any more fly swaps, as decent weather fishing is fast approaching, but I'll join just to get one of Norm's flies.  Perhaps it'll add a little class to my 'for display only' collection.

I'm thinking of tying a 'Ms Simpson', but will have to check my supplies before that becomes definite.
