Hook: From the recycle bin, #12?

    Thread: 8/0 Brown

    Body: Peccary quill

    Wing/Thorax: Deer hair

    Thorax/Head: Hare's mask

Haven't seen anything tied w/ peccary in a while.  Very nice tie @niveker.  Plus 2 for the moose hair tails.

I'll take that shaggy wire caddis

I go where the fish bite.  Mostly Stillwater in the late spring to fall, I love chasing cutthroats and brookies in the summer on higher elevation creeks. Late fall to early spring I chase trouts on the Ark, Blue and the Colorado.  Love the bass bite on Chatfield (near home).  We would love to have you at a High Plains Drifters meeting or fish along.  Let me know if you are interested.  Also belong to a tie-along group that meets at Minturn Anglers if you are interested.  Cheers.

I go where I hope the fish will bite. Hahaha. I'm interested. What's the scoop with the tie-along? I'm hoping you mean Minturn Anglers over by Park Meadows.  You ever fish the South Platte between Waterton and Chatfield?

Welcome to the forum from (another) Coloradan;  I'm about an hour south of Denver.  I assume from your club affiliation, you live in the Denver "area".  (If) you are new to the area, there are several front-range-knowledgeable resources on this forum, Sandan being an excellent example.  There are also lots of terrific fly shops in Denver and nearby (Arvada, Evergreen) - my personal bias is toward Charlies Fly Box in Arvada, but there may also be a good one closer to you, depending on where you live.  I'm an "any water" fly fisher, fresh or salt, but mostly South Platte River.

Here's a website for flow data - very important!

Thank you flyflinger. Charlie's and Anglers All are my go to shops for "stuff".  AvidMax every once in a while. Blue Quill is cool, but too far from me for regular visits. Good catch with the DWR site. My buddy and I use that as one of our most important tools for where to go.

  4. Welcome. Nice start to the journey.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  "I'm on here to soak in information, get some questions answered if any pop up, and hopefully help some others out along the way!"  This would be that place.

My first foray into hackle stackers. The head is a little large and unkempt but overall I’m happy. I have to go get a new bottle of SHHAN. My current bottle is a little thick and caused me to really mess up a head on the 1st one I tied.

    Hook - Size 12 emerger

    Thread - 8/0 Olive Uni

Shuck - Light olive ice dubs

Body - PMD colored turkey biot

    Hackle - Dun

    Thorax - UV peacock herl

Very nice tie. I know it's a bit of a pain but it's an incredibly effective pattern and worth the effort

Thanks Sandan, that’s helpful.  Is that the standard jaw or their midge jaw?  Doesn’t look any different or better than what I’m working with currently on my vises. I too, can tie small on them, but I’m looking for more clearance than I have.

I’ve seen a lot of praise for the TRV, but I’ve not seen any pictures of one holding a small hook like I’m looking for.

That picture was with standard jaws. Midge jaws will give you more clearance. Here's a 22, I believe, in midge jaws. Granted the hook is shoved back in the jaws for the picture.  When I tie the hook bend would be flush with the front edge of the jaws.

    Trolling tube

Quabbin Smelt, my variant of Tom Fawcett's pattern.

pink tube, white thread, body- silver mylar piping under opal mylar piping with red hot spot and opal piping left long and frayed for tail, throat- white bucktail, wing- sparse lavender bucktail,  peacock herl under feather wing (hot pink center with gray outer) silver pheasant cheeks with uv secured 3d eyes. I like a double hook and junction tube to keel the fly.
