I understand that philosophy and it would serve many tyers well- I actually never heard it put that way. The only reason I'm putting together a "hardware store" in my shop is that I tie flies for a living- and I like having everything I need within reason- especially for the stuff I tie often anyway. I'm always trying a new way to organize materials- and hooks and beads seem to be the one I have trouble with the most. Every solution seems to inhibit my workflow and that little bit of friction can stop me in my tracks when it comes time to tie. Besides my reord I definitely think I need to cull exactly what types of patterns I tie just to make the rest of it easier. Thanks for sharing your philosophy- I can respect it.

All over the place right now- tying Pike flies and smallmouth Wigglies to starting to ramp up egg fly orders for the steelhead guys

I just wanted to say that I've found his youtube videos inspirational when it comes to fly tying organization and the creative process in general. His shop infrastructure videos have been particularly interesting, as well as his general philosophy on makers, and first order of retrievability, etc. The attached photo is my tying workshop from probably 2021 ish- but it has remained largely unchanged despite me having a complete shift in the philosophy that this workshop has become. At one point I was selling materials trying to do the ecommerce thing- and that required a vastly different layout, and organization than one of just a tyer. It's taken me 3 years to finally accept that philosophy change and start a complete shop re-org. Also- I'm a generalist fly tyer. I don't specialize in any one thing, so that means I need a lot of material on hand, and if you've watched his videos- I'm debating on setting up different stations in my workshop for specific types of flies. Mainly small trout flies (non streamers) on a dedicated desk with dedicated tools and material storage (probably on either side), my main bench would be for all types of streamers for all types of species.- and lastly a 3rd smaller station for poppers/airbrushing. I love my airbrush but I hate taking it out and putting it away every time I use it just so it's out of the way. I'm not wealthy enough to have a custom made Tie Craft Desk (or what I would prefer a Benches of Colorado custom desk), so a lot of my storage is plastic containers from amazon or walmart or the dollar store. And while I appreciate the job they do, aesthetically I"m probably looking to slowly convert a lot of that into wooden furniture over time. One of my first orders of business is going to be figuring out the hardware I"m going to keep stocked (hooks, beads, cones, lead eyes, etc), and a system for dealing with that. I really like the idea of his Sortimo (they have cheaper parts organizers on Amazon that will work fine for me). All of this to say- I'd love to see your hook/bead organization. What worked for you, what didn't. And also if you have checked out his youtube videos and what you think.

Other than your vise, what is the most important tool
primeflycompany replied to Gene L's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Scissors. They are not all created equal. Unfortunately our industry (or much of it) is what I consider to be a trickle down one- meaning a lot of our products were designed for something else and that includes scissors. And what I've learned in the 11 years I've been tying and selling flies- is that price isn't necessarily a tell all. I foolishly bought a $60 of Tiemco scissors that are more of a nuissance than they are helpful. On the contrary- the $24 Tiemco Deerhair Scissors (blue handle) have been a god send. -
Why don't we just update the software or server that's causing this issue? I agree- this forum is almost unusable at this point. But I prefer it vs. FB Groups by a mile. Maybe we can all pitch in, start a go fund me.

very handsome tie Scott! kicking it off with a bang. I'm working on an Alaskan Rainbow/Silver Salmon (Coho) that I'll post when finished in a couple of days.

^I really dig the color scheme and the look but just watch that hook gap- worst thing is when you get a bunch of strikes and none of them stick. If you need to, you can bend that hook up for a little extra clearance.

Two orders this week. One heading out west to mess with those Montana browns and bulls, one to Minnesota for some smalljaw action.

Yea I tend to have way more white/lighter baitfish patterns- but I needed something for those low light days for higher contrast. We shall see- would love to see some of your flies

Here is a good baby tarpon fly- Drew Chicone's Snake Fly variant that he calls "The Devil's Daughter". Pattern was found in his great resource book, "Feather Brain". Daiichi 2546 Size 1/0 Tail- Ostrich Herl and Peacock Body- Marabou Plumes Head- Deer Body Hair Mixed with Peacock Herl. In the water, the peacock "glows" an orange color.

Here is one of my staple patterns in my euro boxes- the Peacock Cased Caddis Jig- Dead simple- sizes 14, 16, and 18 2 strands peacock herl, small olive ultra wire counter wrapped 8 times, your favorite caddis green dubbing. I usually bigger cased caddis imitations in early spring, but year round I find tons of these things in smaller sizes, especially 14-18. You can vary the dubbing color to a cream or brown- both are good to have.

J. Stockard Sale on Firehole Hooks
primeflycompany replied to mikemac1's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Not a fan of their hooks- I've heard of so many tempering issues in the past- and I've had several bend out on 12-14" stockies in the past (3-4 years ago). Haven't touched them since. Hanak and Fasna have definitely been my preferred choice lately. -

Any money in selling supplies
primeflycompany replied to Muskratkillah's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
You can make money selling fly tying materials as long as you are using a process to make them unique or to find materials and re-market them. There is no money at the end of the day in just reselling from distributors like Wapsi and Hareline because the amount of money required for inventory, and the budget for marketing is insane. But you can develop a small line of materials- dubbings, custom dyed feathers or bucktails, etc and do pretty well. I've been tying and selling flies as a living full time since 2017. In that time I lost a lot of money compared to even a pretty low level job. It pays the bills at times, but it's not sustainable. -
Loving this style of patterns- my personal terrestrial box is way out of date- and needing some of these. Ps- what camera and lens are you using- photos look great
