  1. Thanks, Will. The picture of the fly is really great. What kind of camera were you using? And maybe more to the point, what are some cameras that have the macro feature you recommend that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg? Thanks. Randall
  2. Hey John, that's great!! I've just now found the Lodge & so I'm just now finding out about your good news. Wonderful. The young lady IS a real cutie, as you say. Take good care of her. Learn to swaddle her in a baby blanket. She'll love it. My daughter did. She's now 18 and a High School Senior. Graduates next month. And she's the youngest of 4. Take care. Randall
  3. I went to a nearby pond today and the bream weren't doing much. But I caught several small largemouth bass on foam bugs I bought at Wally World. So I guess I need to learn something about how to do it. I see that Green Caddis Outfitters has several kinds of closed cell foam, but do I want thin, extra thin, etc? Their were two patterns that I had and both were working fine. One was a beetle-looking thing and the other was a stone fly. Both had rubber band legs. Can someone give me some information and maybe a source to look at that tells how to do this. Thanks. Breambuster
  4. Mine are in the mail. Sent them off today. OSD, you should be getting them soon. 12 of the Bully's Bluegill Spider. Also, OSD, I'm sending you a PM, so keep an eye on your mailbox. Breambuster
  5. I found out this morning that I can get the IRC's in our County Seat town. The nearest town to me, about 8 miles away is pretty small and the Post Office here doesn't have them. Anyway, since I'm pretty sure I can work out the deal about Canadian Postage, count me in on the Newbie Swap. I think I'll tie the "Cat's Whisker." Breambuster
  6. Thanks to all. The order has been placed. And I went for the large size.
  7. I'm looking for a hair stacker, & I see that Bass Pro Shops has them in two sizes. One is "large" and the other is "small." The reason for going with Bass Pro Shop is that they have some other stuff I want as well. I tie mostly bluegill and crappie flies, but I also tie some clousers for bass. I rarely have a chance to go trout fishing. I don't do any salt water fly fishing. Most of my tying is on hook sizes 6 - 12. I will be using buck tail on the clousers, but may also tie some flies that call for squirrel tail for the fly tail. Do I want the small hair stacker or the large? Thanks. Breambuster
  8. I read on another thread about some problems with mailing flies from the US to Canada. The Swapmister there was going to drive across the border into NY to mail the flies back to tiers from the US. What's the latest word on that? I might be willing to participate, depending on the postage issue. Breambuster
  9. I've got 6 of my 12 done. I'll try to get the rest tied and in the mail next week. Hope no one thinks mine are a "gob of fuss on a hook." It's been so long since I tied that it's like starting over, but as this stage in the game, they represent my best work. OSD, will you PM me your address, or is it posted here somewhere? Also, what information do you need on the toe tag? My real name, my user name, the name of the pattern, all the above? Thanks.
  10. Thanks, OSD, Glad to be a part. As I PM'ed you, I'll be tying the "Bully's Bluegill Spider" as per the book by Terry And Roxanne Wilson. As I understand it, I send you 12 of those in an Altoid's Tin, with toe tags, along with an SASE. And I need to get them to you by May 15. Will you PM me your mailing address? Anything else I need to know? This is my first swap, except for an informal one with another member of this forum. I've received his & mine go out to him Monday, (if the Post Office is open.) Take care.
  11. Hey, OSD, I'm brand new to the forum & don't really know how this works. I did read the rules. I think we're talking about 12 of the same fly? I know it's late, but I'd like to be in on this because I'm wanting to fly fish for bluegills and crappie. Is it too late? Randall
  12. What is your favorite knot for tying the fly to the tippet AND WHY? Is it your favorite because it's easy to tie, or because it effects the action of the fly in the water, or for some other reason? Thanks.
  13. It's on page 85, bottom of the left column. Thanks
  14. The instructions in the book are incomplete. It looks like 2 pieces of foam will be needed for each fly. The first piece extends well beyond the bend of the hook and the second is doubled and tied down the shank of the hook. Both pieces must be about twice the length of the hook shank and the pattern recommends a size 12 light wire, 1X long dry fly hook. As far as diameter, it looks pretty small, I'm guessing the 1/8 inch. The picture is slightly enlarged, and the foam in the enlarged picture measures 3/16. Let's start with enough for 2 or 3 flies. Thanks
  15. There is a pattern for a blue foam damselfly in Skip Morris' book, "The Art Of Tying The Bass Fly." The material is descibed as, "cylindrical closed-cell soft foam." He says to either by blue foam or to color it with a permanent marking pen. Can anyone tell me where to buy this material. And if it needs to be colored, is a "Sharpie" pen good, or do I need something else? Thanks
  16. After a brief tutorial on Goose Biots on this forum, I tied my first Catalpa Worm fly last night. In fact I tied it twice. The first one was too thin, so on the second, I over-wrapped the body and it turned out much better. I am really pleased with it and am looking forward to getting into some bluegill water one of these days. I wish I had one of those fancy cameras so I could show you a picture, but.... Maybe one day. Anyway, thanks to all for your help. and again thanks for the warm reception on this forum. "Don't catch 'em all!"
  17. Thanks, again OSD. Is it permitted to ask on this forum about mail order houses that supply fly tying materials? Such as, "Where do you get your materials?" Thanks
  18. Thanks, OSD, nice looking fly. I looked on the Fly Pattern Database & didn't find the pattern. Can you share what materials you used, etc? Thanks
  19. I posted a request for info about biots last night & was both helped and welcomed. Thanks! My wife and I have bought a small get-away house near Lake Hartwell in Oconee County, SC. I hope to be able to do some fishing this summer. The cabin is about 3 1/2 hours from where we live. So I don't get to go there real often. I hope to fly cast around boat docks & peirs for bluegills (bream) and crappie. I have gotten some ideas for bluegill flies, & a couple of patterns for crappie, including the Clouser minnow. Would anyone like to make other suggestions about crappie flies? There was a post elsewhere on this board that listed the red fox squirrel nymph, notorious nymph, Carter's Dragon, Estaz Bug, Cat's Whiskers, Steeve's submerged firefly, seed bead soft hackly, cahaba X, Sanchez's Swamp Monster, marabou miss, and madam X for bluegills. I'll have to find patterns for most of those. I don't know what they look like. I also hae the book by Terry & Roxanne Wilson & have tied their Bully Bluegill Spider. Is there anything else that I need to consider? Thanks
  20. Thanks. I started reading back through the forum after posting and had guessed that might be the answer. I'll let you know how it goes. I haven't tied in quite a while, but recently became interested in tying some patterns for bluegill and crappie. I found that pattern in a book by Roxanne Wilson. This is a neat forum. I think I'll be sticking around. Take care.
  21. I have a pattern for a wet fly that simulates a catalpa worm. The tail is to be made of goose biots. I ordered goose biots and got 6 long, thin feathers. The feathers must be 5-6 inches long. How do I make tails out of them? Thanks
