  1. Thanks Roy!! The dun version is all I've played around with so far. Actually,a friend an I were just discussing adding your "Reverse Para" to our arsenal just this morning. I have to study that step-by-step more closely though. As stated,it looks like it's alot harder to explain, than to actually tie! Again, thanks for the kind words!! Sulfernut
  2. Ray....This is actualluy a new pattern for me as well! The idea is simply that through the design of the fly,it rides on the water as it is seen in the admittedly poor photograph....with the hook point above the water! Advantages to using it??? Unknown as of yet,but I'm hoping it keeps trout from finning their noses at my usually reliable Comparaduns and Parachutes!!! :hyst: Sulfernut
  3. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by ericom3: Sulfer Funneldun
  4. My prediction is not so much that the price will increase with increrased sales. It is more based on the inescapable fact that once you associate the words "fly tying" or "fly fishing" with an item,it seems to be a license to bump the price up...sometimes just a little....sometimes to the point of being ridiculous!! Sad,but true, for the 40 plus years I have been tying/fishing flies! Last year,it dawned on me (and, apparently a ton of other people!) that this hook is perfect for so many applications! Deer hair bass bugs, and freshwater Clouser's were obvious choices, but then I found out that Mustad made them down to size#14,and more applications came to mind, most notably panfish/trout sized versions of things like Clouser's,etc. But despite their extreme versatility, the most attractive thing about them was the price! When J.Stockard trolled the forum last fall, for suggestions on new products to carry,I was one of the guys that strongly suggested this hook,in a large,if not full range of sizes. I also saw, that I was not alone!! I decided right then, that I would buy what for me,will no doubt be a lifetime supply,in all sizes. I looked around for quite a while before finding a place that carried them in all of the sizes made. I feel almost like a "traitor" to Stockard for posting this here, but it is after all an open forum: http://www.terminaltackleco.com/ I was able to grab a box of 100 hooks in every size, from 3/0 down to 14 for a little less than $40.00. You just can't beat that!! Especially since on that same day,I placed an order for ONE box of Gamakatsu SC-15 stanless steel hooks, that cost me.....a little less than $40.00. ..and that was the best price I could find!!! A couple of weeks ago,I received a catolog in the mail (vendor name withheld) that was listing these hooks for $4.65 a box! It was the first evidence I'd seen, that the price might be starting to creep up. So,my prediction still stands....let Mustad and their distributors find out that the fly tying community has adopted this hook as a "genuine" tying iron, and the price will go up! Sulfernut
  5. Soft Hackle!! That looks an awful lot like a Mustad #3366,the best kept secret in fly tying hooks! Let me know if I got it right, and I'll tell you about a prediction I made last year!! Sulfernut
  6. Ahhhhhh....Silly me!!! Sulfernut
  7. VERY nice cray imitation indeed!!! Good tying instructions too...One thing stumped me in the recipe, that being "squirrel or bucktail w/ tow rubbers"....What are tow rubbers??? Sulfernut
  8. I've had good dealing's with these guys..... http://www.anglersworkshop.com/ Good customer service and tremendous selection of materials! Sulfernut
  9. Guys: Try here: http://www.eflytyer.com/order_info/oi_synthetics.html Apparently, this stuff is getting harder to source!! Sulphernut
  10. sherrib....If you are serious about mastering this type of tying,go to this website: http://www.chartingnature.com/ Look for a DVD called "Tying Bass Flies with Jimmy Nix".....Iknow,I know....Chris Helms is the undisputed guru of spun deer hair, but TRUST ME....Mr. Nix is a GREAT teacher, and in this DVD concentrates on flies for BASS!! I see you are from great bass country, and assume bass are what you are tying for...?? The website above is the only place I was able to find this title on DVD...If you prefer it on VHS,it is available in more places. Have fun....perhaps you and sniksoh will be moderators of the "warmwater division" of the forum one day!!! Sulfernut
  11. Hi sherrib!! Nice bug indeed!! It will certainly catch fish. I can tell you,MY first spun hair bug looked nothing like that...or,for that matter like anything that occurs in nature!! I mentioned the other day, that I considered spinning and trimming deer hair one of the more challenging skills in the fly tying game. Stay at it Sulfernut
  12. They turned out VERY well!!! One thing I love about this fly...It's pretty much "goof-proof"!!! Sufernut
  13. They appear to be just the right sixe for "Bob's Bangers"...a saltwater popper, that I'm SURE would not feel out of place on a bass pond!! http://www.aswf.org/saltwater_flies_for_we...bob_banger.html Sufernut
  14. They don't carry the genuine article,or anything that actually gets close...However,I read a post on this forum somewhere, that you can make the stuff yourself. Two materials are needed: One is called Lexel...Lexel is something like a super refined silicone sealant. It's best quality,is it's clarity...unlike "regular' silicone sealer, which is cloudy in appearance,Lexel is crystal clear! (if you wanted to make a Flexament replacement, you could use standard GE slicone sealer) The second item is Toluene, which I found at a paint shop. (you won't find it at Lowes or HD) The formula I heard went like this: Take a 3 or 4 oz.GLASS jar,and squeeze in about 1oz of the Lexel...top off with 3oz of the Toluene...Then.(and this appeared to be important) let the mixture sit for several hours, covered of course. Apparently it takes to Toluene some time to "break down" the slicone. After sitting a few hours,it can be mixed by your favorite means! DO THIS ALL IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA...Toluene fumes are NOXIOUS!!! not to mention potentially dangerous to one's health if inhaled full strength for a lengthy spell! I have not tried this yet,but I see no reason in the world why it would not work. The biggest advantage?? LOW cost!! For a tube of Lexel and a quart of Toluene, you will only pay slightly more than you do for a 3oz jar of Softex!! Makes you a little more willing to put up with a bit of fumes, now doesn't it?? :hyst: :hyst: Seriously though...do this OUTSIDE THE HOUSE. One whiff of the Toluene, and you'll see why!! Sulfernut
  15. Doesn't it feel GREAT!!!???? :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: As previously suggested, shorten up the weedguard, and it is perfection!! The spun deerhair bug is IMHO one of fly tying's steepest challenges!! If you want to get a really great "crash course" in spinning deer hair, get a DVD called "Jimmy Nix,Tying bass Flies" It is available here ://www.chartingnature.com/ I have also heard great things about Chris Helms but to be honest,I saw one of Mr.Helms very early vid's and the Jimmy Nix vid left it in the dust!! Nice Bug!!! Sulfernut
  16. Ape: Had the very same problem when I first tied this fly!! Use a few more fibers, and when you "pull" them over the thorax, try to flatten the bundle with your thumbnail. Playing around with how much tension you put on the wingcase when tying it down can help as well! I think it looks really good, and am POSITIVE the fish won't give a hoot that you clipped the tail and legs! I didn't notice it until the last guy did!! Sulfernut Welcome
  17. GrapeApe...looks like it's true...."It's like riding a bike"!!! Doesn't look like you've lost a step!!! Sulfernut
  18. Oliver Edwards is indeed an engaging sort isn't he?? The link Old Hat provided in the last post seems to have these DVD's at decent pricing. Keep something in mind, when considering them...most of them are at least 3 hours or more in length!! The last "instructional" tying DVD I bought (which will remain nameless!) I paid $27.00 for....and it contained 33 minutes of instruction!! Something to consider!! Sulfernut
  19. Merely it's length...that's all!!!
  20. Day 5....witness THIS thread: http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?sho...9&hl=IceDub I think the "post police" will let this one slide!! :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst:
  21. I still say this guy is sitting on a gold mine, with no way to get it out of the ground!! There is no doubt as to the quality of his products...especially for the cost!! I have e-mailed him at least twice, simply to ask when the items marked "coming soon" on the website might be "coming"...no answer...I signed up for the e-mailed newsletter over a month ago....no newsletter !! The only conclusion I can come to,is that he's trying to do everything himself. Because of things like this forum, his products are catching on,and he's finding it impossible to keep up with the demand. Also,he is reluctant to hire help, because to do so would necessitate paying said help, which in turn would necessitate raising his prices! Welcome to the world of retail sales!! I really don't expect to see this guy around much longer...one of the requirements of a sucessful business (most particularly an internet-based business) is good, if not excellent customer service...he cannot or will not provide this. It's a shame!! His "Skeeter Fuzz" is without a doubt the best dry fly bubbing I have ever used! He keeps promising "more colors on the way" but I'm not holding my breath! I'll just order some of whatever he's got ,and hope it comes before the Dungeon collapses under it's own weight! Sulfernut
  22. Warren took the words right out of my "post"...as far as a link goes,I Googled "Keith Fulsher Thunder Creek" and got more links than you could shake an #8 weight at!!! Sulfernut
  23. RoyC!! Are you the "Roy" in "Roy's Reverse Para"??? Some fly!! I thought Waterwisps were fiddly!! Whilst looking at the step by step that the link took me to,it occured to me that I'd seen this done before, most likely in a magazine article (which I will be searching my archives for for the next few days!) I can't recall the author,or what it was called, but it started to look familiar once there was a picture of the hackle being wound about the mono! BTW, if you've never tried tying a funneldun,I can attest to the fact that they are quite simple to master. I will study the reverse para, but make no promises on getting around to trying it!! ( although it's probably alot easier to show how to tie this in person, than with a series of photo's) It may well depend on hoe the fish treat my Funnelduns and Waterwisps this year!!! Go Fishing!! Sulfernut!
  24. It just swept over me,that this thread was started FOUR YEARS AGO!!!!!
