Thanks for the info for sure. Most of my jig heads don't have a collar and only this kind and one other minnow head that has them. I have from 1/80 Oz to 1/4 Oz. and I get the feeling all of them up to the 1/32 will do well on a fly rod which I have been trying to use more the last couple years just so I can have more fun. Also most of the jig heads I have I keep several different size hooks with both regular bend and sickle hooks, which I really like that Sickle hook. Again I really appreciate that info because most of the time when I buy heads I make him cut them off before they come to me, but this jig head is one I wanted a collar to tie kip tail on it for some guys in Louisiana Sounds good and not hard at all. Skip.

Oh sorry about that I forgot the second one which is the same size hook, but on a bigger head that has some what of a small collar on it which is not the best thing to dub over, but it was not a full collar and I just wanted to use the color head to make this one. Less hook shows because of the kind of head. I did actually tie this one before the other one. Then I will add a picture of what was about my 4th try on rope dub and it's not really what I wanted, but I feel sure it will catch crappie. I do think that I am getting very close to being happy with my results using rope dub and will add more to flies and jigs soon. Skip So the one I tied just before the one in top post (1/16 Oz)... 1/32 Oz. was about my 4th attempt which I may just redo it (should have just added a hackle collar)...

Well I have had the info for a good wile, but have not had time to use it very much. I think something like a total of 10-12 jigs & flies I have tied using rope dub method. Keep in mind I have never tried tying segmented bodies at all. I have done a few flies that I used the dubbing loop to make Peacock Herl to tie on a fly, but they were not segmented bodies. So on segmented bodies I have tied a total of 7 or 8 flies and jigs so this 1/60 Oz. jig I tied a few days ago I was very pleased it came out like I wanted it to so think I am learning pretty fast now. I do think this is small enough to fish on a fly rod, but since my boat is stuck in slings since last Sept. I don't get to fish a lot since that as our lake is about 9' low and no water under my boat. I still have a bit of trouble deciding that I have enough material to dub with, but I guess that will come with practice. I should say this material is SLF Prism Dubbing. So tell me what you think of this one.... Skip

I didn't have that link then! I got it after you posted what I thought was the same thing. Skip

Yes I would say you missed the part that I said I am not proficient with it enough yet as I have not had time. I have only made maybe 5 or 6 total ties using it so far. I can't take the time to learn it like I need to when I am behind on what I owe my customers with my jigs. This is my last post here and sorry to have insulted you all with my so called Spam. I guess it was too much of a reach to think I may be trying to show you something that will help you. Now that may be up for grabs to each person whether I am posting this to expose you to this for your benefit and since I am the only person here that knows that, I think it very cool stuff so thought I would tell you about it since no one said they knew anything about it with my first post back on this board when I ask is anyone here using rope dub. I guess it's too much of a reach to think people will understand you reasons even when stated. Why did no one reply to this? Just rude or don't know anything about it? http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=59880 Believe me I don't feel welcome here and will not stay and I feel the rude behavior from some here that I would never let them do on my board and that is for sure. I certanily don't need any of you to explaine Spam to me since I have dealt with that for years as a mod and still do. Anyone that can't read what I said and "still not get it" must be a bit on the slow side. NJFlyMan I notice you edited your post because it was saying what I told you here in this thread, now that is pretty funny. I guess it was just too much on my side of this. I guess your post of this article was just too positive huh? http://web.archive.org/web/20030810142722/www.virtualflybox.com/articles/article.php?id=5 Johnny Utah from reading your post I don't expect you to change no matter what I say. I feel sure you will keep missing just want you want to. Later Gents and I use that word loosely. Skip

Yes I bought the DVD last July and have just been so busy I have not been able to really get to a point that I can practice enough to get it down. I tie and sell Crappie jigs and a few flies, none of them rope dub. I talk a lot on Crappie.com since I am what they call a super Mod there and also am one of the mods on the jig tying board. It's sort of my job to talk about things I find and point out what I think some would like a lot in tying. I have a web site, but you will not find that DVD on there, but maybe a jig picture of one Don tied. I would have really appreciated someone asking me with a PM or something rather than just post junk that is not true. DO I like this technique, you bet and if you don't see the possibilities with this then you have not seen it nor do you know enough to talk about it. This post is not spam because it's not my DVD and I don't sell it. I challenge any of you to find it for sale on my web site and I will give you the link gladly! Go one find it and while your at it check out where my site ranks for Hand tied Jigs with the major search engines! http://thumpitjigs.com/ At least one person on this board knew me enough to know I am a helpful sort (Mike) if you bother to ready the other post I made about this. I am trying to show people the possibilities and how much faster and easier things can be done even if I don't have time to learn it right my self. Also at least NJFlyMan looked up the right person with this style of tying. ANyone and I do mean anyone that sees this video and can't see how it would help them either has their mind made up already or doesn't want to see it, IMHO! So I am just an old disabled guy that ties for something to do and got more orders than I can keep up with since my shoulder gave me trouble for about 6 weeks. I am so sorry I ever came back here even if I have been a member since 2006. So believe me when I say I sure wont be showing any more anything here as you guys are as quick of a trigger on your key board to accuse me as fast as I do on one of my guns when hunting deer and see a huge buck! I am sure none of you that accuse without knowing care to take time to know anything without shooting off that key board. You guys are really something else! Hey you guys all have a great weekend and please don't buy that DVD because I wouldn't want to make you tying easier and faster for sure now. Try to help people and all they do is spit on you! Oh I almost for got I am also a member of a Pipe Smoking Forum and I posted some of the pictures there to so I am sure it's spam and I am trying to sell a bunch of pipe smokers the DVD, LOL! Get real please! Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Skip

I don't have anything to do with the DVD and just like the whole idea. I don't know enough to show you how anyway and if this offend you then I am sorry about that too! I don't have any way to show any of this method as I am not far enough into it to explain it so I guess you should just do without it. If you guys wish I will just go back to where I have been for a long time and be busy with where I know who I am talking to! I guess some people just want something for nothing and I can't help that either. I do know I paid more than you would if you bought it now as I paid $50 for it. If you want to come over to my house and see it I could do that. If anyone else knows how to do this they probably would have said something by now. You must have SPAM in the brain as like I said have nothing to do with this DVD except I want the next one if he makes it. I can do without being accused wrongly so I guess it's time to say adios to this board again. Some people are just skeptical and even spit out thing when they know nothing. Funny how it's seems to be the same people that want something for nothing huh? Have a great day! Skip

Sorry the only place I know of is the DVD. It's pretty cool stuff and I am trying to learn, but I don't have enough time after I tie the jigs I have to for my orders. I would be farther along, but my shoulder gave me a lot of trouble after the first of the year and I just got so far behind I am still trying to catch up. When I do I will spend all my time doing this rope dub. Besides even if I could teach it that wouldn't be very fair to the guy that spent the money making that DVD. Actually I am hoping he sells enough to make the second one planned because it will have a lot more stuff in it and I want to learn all I can. He's been tying like this for 30 years and I have also been told by people that have tied a lot longer that the DVD is the best way to learn. I know Denny Conrad of Conranch Hackle said he saw Don demo it at several shows and figured he would be able to do it once home, but was not able to remember enough so had to buy the DVD. There is so much info on that DVD I wouldn't let mine out of my sight. I figure for the time saved tying that it's so worth it because you can tie so much faster. Like you can do the dubbed body of a fly with segmented look and change of colors all at ones time in like 30 second to a minute. I also plan on starting to use this rope dub on some of my jigs so I have something different than other jig tiers. Skip

Now mind you I am still learning, but I am pretty sure you can. I think it depends a lot on materials used. It seems you can almost tie any kind of fly this way and get even better results due to the way you can use the thread to rope on or even a piece of wire if you want more bullet proof. To your question I know if I tie with hares mask it going to be a lot more spiky than if I just use rabbit dubbing and same with squirrel. Probably depends on how much you pick it out because it will make a very tight rope if you want or losser if you are looking for more fluff on the fly. At least that is what I see. I guess the really cool thing to me is lets say you want to make some peacock chenille and want some hackle on it. Well you can rope the Hurl and include the hackle with it and as you tighten the rope the hackle stick out and you can even see the stem as it's inside the rope so much more likely to last longer with out the hackle getting cut and if you did that on a piece of wire then it would even be more durable. I was watching the DVD again yesterday and watch this was very nice and made a great looking house fly. Picture below as he sent me one. It would be a lot better if you just email Don from his site and don't think he would mind at all answering questions you may have. I am a novice at this for sure. Skip House Fly... Then a dubbed fly with Hackle

I ask Don for a couple of Picture that would show the variety of what you can do with this type tying and he sent me these two photos. Kind of wish I had them so I could have taken the pictures separate. Skip This is a chunk of combed lamb's wool and the only additional material used was hackle. Here's one for hare's ears:

Great looking frog! I am thinking that I saw how this was made some place and didn't look really all that easy? May have been yours I saw because it looks just like that. Skip

Very nice job on the poppers for sure. I made some of this type a few years ago and enjoyed making them. Skip

Hi Mike, Good to see you again and just glad I was a help in some way. I have to say this DVD is probably the best money I ever spent on tying. One demo is not enough and there is so many ways to use it the DVD actually shows many of them and I think really great money spent by me. I only hope it does well enough for him to make the next DVD he wants to, but needs this one to do better to get to that one. Once you watch the DVD it just opens up so many possibilities it;s mind boggling to me. You can do so much with it and it's so much faster than a loop or splitting thread for a loop and so much more versatile. Example would be you can rope your hackle right into it and wrap it all at one time and get the segmented body and change of colors, actually too many thing for me to remember right now. I need to watch it again and again. I feel sure that I will watch this DVD so many times to try and learn all I can from it. It's got the Wow Factor for sure! I was told about it by Denny Conrad which I am sure many here know him. I was buying some hackle from him last fall and when he told me about it and how it opened his eyes even though he had been tying for over 50 years and a lot commercially. However when he told me he would by it from me if I didn't like it, I just thought he must be pretty sure i would so I took the jump. Since then I have been so buys tying my jigs and I got so far behind due to some shoulder troubles, I have not had time to practice like I so much want to. I am about to really get after it even it it means I stop taking orders for my jigs for a bit. I feel that I mush take advantage of this technique as with it you can do it most any materials. Here is hoping for the #2 Rope Dub DVD as I want it bad! Let me add one more fly pic, Skip
-
I didn't tie these, the guy that I am learning the technique from (Don Ordes) tied some for me to have as examples. Then I took some pictures of his work with Fluorescent materials and then he wanted me to show him how to take the photos. I will include a couple of Jigs he did for me and a couple of flies which I feel sure are more interesting to you guys. These are all tied fast with segmented bodies and change of colors if wanted. Pretty cool stuff and I also hope you enjoy my photos. Skip 1/32 Oz. Roadrunner or Pony Head (Under a Black Light) One more of the same. Rope Dubbed Fly

It's been a long time since I posted here, but just been crazy busy for a long time. Sorry about that not posting in a good while! I have been so busy I have not had enough time to do much of anything other than try and catch up as I had some trouble with my shoulder that slowed my tying to a snail pace. I bought the DVD on Rope Dub tying and love the whole idea and how fast it is and really looks awesome. So my question is do any of you use the Rope Dub method to tie? If so what do you think of it? I know it's a lot faster and so much more versatile, but wanted to hear what some of you may have to say about it. Thanks, Skip

More Poppers Tied For Display At Raffles

Very nice work! Skip -
Thanks to all, but I just got more not so hot news about my son. We just heard today that he still has a problem with his stump not healing right and they are going in for more surgery Friday. He was thinking it was getting better and had already started rehab, but now a set back. I guess it will possible mean taking the bridge out and maybe even taking more of his leg off, but not sure yet. He has been through so much since getting blown up by that IED in Dec. 2006. Any prayers appreciated, Skip

Thank you Fred, I will see what I can find or maybe try to call or contact Bill. I only started tying about 3 years ago and started tying crappie jigs. people started asking if I sell them and the more I thought about it that sounded just like what I needed, something to do. That led to at some point wanting to tie flies even though I had not fly fished since I was a kid long time back. Then that led to be buying a really cheap rig from Walmart and that led to getting a much better one and have not used it near enough. I enjoy it a lot and will get after the crappie next spring when the hit that 2' of water. Anyway that is how I got to doing this without even knowing what was going on around here. I had heard about the Piny Woods Fly fishing Club, but knew nothing about it or even where they were other than East Texas. Skip
-
I don't know anything about that, but would love to know more. How would I check hat out. I tie and sell flies, but I mostly I tie crappie jigs. The fly tying is more of a want to do thing and take my time. Also don't know Bill, but probably would like to. Thanks, Sip

Thank you about my son, he one tough cookie and will come out good no matter. He has a great military career even if he can't go back to an active SF group as they have taken a real liking to him. They even created a job for him at Mac Dill with SOCOM. As for the Poppers they are hard foam. Skip

Have not been here is a good while, but have been busy with hurricanes and other family things nd jut being busy. So good to be back here and hope to get some opinions about these. Don't remember if I even told you guys about my son getting blown up in Baghdad by and IED is Dec. 2006, but finally we are getting to the last stages of recovery. He just had his leg amputated about 2 months back and is now in Rehab. He couldn't keep his bad foot and still go back to an active unit in SF so with this he hopes to return to an active unit in the field. He has to be able to jump out of air planes again. Why at 40 he still wants to do that I don't know, but he does. He go hisGreen Beret at 37 so I don't doubt that he will do well in the end of this. All that really now can get in his way now is his thin skin form the burnes and the new below the knee leg. Skip Crappie Candy in 4 colors... Poppers... And some Buggers...

Thanks! I used some antenna material from Spirit River, but they are long and straight so I cut them to length and heated the ends for the ball and used my nail to curve them. Skip

Well I cut this body too thin and wanted to see if I could still tie one that looked OK. I got too much hackle and it's too long so I cut it some after this pic, but other than that what do you think? I made the eyes and antenna. Skip
