One of my new customers for my jigs ask me the other day if I wanted some hair/fur hats. He told me he's had them a long time and someone gave them to him and he thinks they are over 40 years old. Anyway his wife told him to throw them out and he ask if I wanted them and without a doubt I wanted to take a look. They are the round hats that are a few different kinds of fur (don't know what all of them are) and the only one that is coming apart looks to be a red fox or something like that. I will keep it in a bag and just cut off what I need at the time. The others are in great shape and Two are some kind of thick shorter fur and I guess I can make dubbing out of it huh? Any info or help about what I should do with them other than tie is what i am looking for. Here are pics... The one on the right is one of what I am calling short fur? I am pretty sure the other two are raccoon and one is I guess died to have silver tips or am I missing something? This is the one I am thinking is red fox maybe and the other is another of the short thick fur. Anyone know what the ones on the right in the both pic are? Thanks, Skip

I really like mine as well. Great Pics and all I need now is a little time to read it and really look at the material in there. I have been so busy with tying jigs and then going to Florida to visit my son that I have had it for some time now and not been able to enjoy it like I will. Skip

I was recommended to use "Water Shed" and it is supposed to be permanent and not greasy. I have some to try, but have not been fishing because I have so many jigs to tie lately. You use it before you use the fly and it will help so I am told. Skip

Remember I am a novis with flies, but after speaking with someone that knows more than I do, here is what I have to help my dry flies float longer. I bought some "Water Shed" a waterproofing liquid that is not messy like some brands. Also Doc's Dry Dust to use before I go fishing and maybe just before making the first cast. Skip

Hey Skip, Thanks for that... Thanks for offering to tell where to get the stuff, but I'm in Thailand and I'm sure it's not available here. However, I usually go back to Virginia to visit my family every summer. I saw a lot of scents at the Bass Pro Shop, but didn't get any. I reckon I could get my brother to send me over some. Or, what I could do, and what I was thinking, is make my own scent. The Thais already have quite a few food items that stink like crazy and I might just try them to see. Funny, they think that eating cheese is nasty, yet they gobble down a rotten fish head in a second. BPS is OK and all, but you may want to check this place out for your family to get you some really great stuff. http://www.alltackle.com/attractants.htm I have nothing to do with them other than buy their products. Yes I use 5 min epoxy to glue in the hook. Then I paint everything in the order it will take to look right. Then I do finish with Sally Henson's. Oh if you are going to out in rubber legs do it after you paint. Next tie in the tail and if you put hackle tie it in then whip finish. Skip

If you were not talking about carp, but some fish that goes after bait fish I some times use some shad oil on my jigs and could see where it may be good on a Clouser or a similar bait. Maybe even streamers and the like. If you want to know where to get shad and or some other oils like Menhaden, Crawfish just ask. I would be happy to share my place to get that because it's not every place that you can get 100% shad oil. They also have salt water products like shrimp and squid oil. Skip

I saw this yesterday on Fox News and thought it a excellent idea and opportunity to help out injured soldiers. So anyone that has some time check out this program and volunteer if you have a mind to... http://projecthealingwaters.org/ Skip PS I already contacted them!

That's a great deal you got. The reason I ask was the only capes I saw on Ebay for that kind of money were hen. Way to go! Skip

They are hen capes right? Also did you have to bid for them or did you find them as buy now? Thanks, Skip

Thanks for the info guys I appreciate the comments/tips! I will start trying to make the tails shorter on the gill poppers. I am hoping that the crappie may hit it next spring in the shallows too, but if not April and May here the big gills come out and I plan on finding some of the big boys. Once caught 42 with a friend on this lake with crickets and they were from 3/4 pound to 1 3/4 pound. What a day for gill fishing that was. Found them while bass fishing with plastic worms. Skip

Well I hope to get better at painting the frog pattern, but this is my first one and want any comments about how to improve the painting that you may have. Thanks, Skip

The best time to get the crappie on a fly rod I would think should be in spring when they get in that 2' of water. At that time a small jig like a 1/80 or 1/64 should also work very well. I used my 10' jig pole last spring and would troll motor down the bank standing on my front deck and have about 12' or a little more of line out and just flip it over to the water I was targeting and I could watch as they would come up and take the jig I was just kind of pulling along. Another option is putting some epoxy on and I like the depth it gives the eyes, but not so sure it will catch any more fish, LOL! Here is one with epoxy head...

I think you will catch fish on them and they look just fine. If you ever decide you want some of the yarn let me know as when I buy it I have to buy a dozen spools at a time and they are 10 yards per spool. I have them in FL. Chart, FL Yellow, Hot Pink & FL Orange. Another think you could do as a substitute is use Ultra Chenille in Std. size and get it in FL, Chart. I am making some in all the colors I have. Hot pink is a great color for crappie as is the other 4 colors of the yarn. Skip

I agree with both of you and love the Poppers. I am thinking about some unusual ones and wanted to see if anyone mentioned the colors I am thinking about, but no one has yet so let me just say them.... First I have so silver metallic Acrylic paint that I am sure ones covered with Sally Henson's will look good, but I don't remember seeing a popper with a metallic head yet. Then Pink, yes pink. I never used pink much until last year really at least in fresh water, but I tied on a jig that was all hot pink and did really well with it so that got me to thinking about making a popper with a hot Pink head. Just guessing here, but you must have not see my previous Popper post? http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=29317 Thanks though, Skip

Thought I would never catch up on jig orders, but finally this morning I have none in front of me at this moment so I finished this Popper and want to know what you think of the colors. I need to come up with more colors to try. Have any suggestions? Skip

Thanks guys for the nice comments and I can't wait for spring to see how good this one can be. Nothing like top water fishing to pump your blood up! Skip

Thanks, Yes I painted the head. It started out as white. Skip

Looking for your comments and any recommendations I should change on the next one? I would think a Bass would eat this huh? Thanks, Skip

Sorry to be so slow answering, but I just missed the post. It is Danville Fluorescent Wool Yarn in FL. Chartreuse. I buy it direct from Danville, but I am sure other places carry it. Skip
