I'm with J. I keep my nymphs as simple as possible. So much so that I began tying about 90% of all of my nymphs in the round. for hellgiesi like a marabou tail (short), a chenille body, and some soft Hale thrown in a little back from the head. I've found in my waters that color and size are the two most important things. Match the general shape and there is really nothing left. Steve

Edmonton Alberta Fly Fishing July? Guides?
Steve P replied to FlyFishin'Jam's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
You can only fly fish for trout? -
See I had the right idea. Just a little off on the tie in points and quantity. I'll probably use silicone for the heads. I've always liked it since I started playing with pop fleyes many moons ago. I've just been trying to tie the materials too sparse. I really appreciate the sbs Thanks a ton. I'll see if I can get a pic to upload here later.

I could get another HMH for less. I just found it to be a very pleasing to the eye kind of thing. Steve

Doesn't look bad. What is the price point on it? Who is it made by? Steve

So far I have all of that... Problem I'm having is it looks like he is simply hollow tying the sf blend but not building in front of the fibers. I may be wrong here I really don't know. I googled for probably 45 minutes trying to find something.

I'm looking for a step by or a video on how the 10k baitfish is tied. I love the profile and with white bass runs quickly approaching I'm needing some good shad imitations. I tie lots of high tie shad and the like but I love tying and playing with new patterns more than anything. Anyone have anything they could help me out with here? I think I have it but they don't look just right yet Thanks fellas. Steve

Blue "quills" my bad. Well you can tell what I was tying for all day yesterday... Steve

A ball of neutral color dubbing on a hook works for gills.i like to never go below a size 10 so they don't swallow them so deep. Normally though I fish a 6 or 4. I tie them on wet hooks that have a standard length hook shall as opposed to the 2xl nymph hook. Work perfect for me. Steve

I like the tip tying method as I like just 1 or 2 turns at most and this gives me more stem to hold onto. For my nymphs tied in the round I really like to use the method that Hans uses and I still tip tie so I can use as much usable hackle as possible. Steve

And you can easily stress and kill a very magnificent and already stained resource by not be able to bring the fish to hand quickly and efficiently. Just because the fish swims away doesn't mean it lived. Respect the resource ladies and gentlemen. Steve

Boy howdy that thong better fish. Excellent work with hair. Steve

It's called the rule of 11... Look at the diameter, let's say we have a spool that is labeled .006 whatever you add to that to make 11 would be the "x" size. So 6+5=11 thus making it 5x tippet size. Most every spool of line sold these day is labeled with the diameter somewhere on it. If you can remember the simple rule of 11 you can always find the x size of any line smaller than .011. Steve

Absolutely nothing illegal about bison at all as it is a domestically raised and famed species. Bison can be had rather cheap and in easy supply. This whole subject side from things such as song birds and some other federally protected species is rather mute. Anything defined in the cites act is fine as long at it was collected prior to the cites act. I have a small supply of polar bear that is all pre cites as well as a few other things. Burden of proof lies upon me Yes but if usfw is going to take that kind of time to really take after me then they really must have nothing better to do. Steve

Also note that possession of a feather from a song bird such as a blue Jay or Cardinal is federally restricted. They are protected nation wide as song birds. Along with many many others. Can't even pick up a feather from the ground. Steve

Such as what? If you were to purchase said material and have it shipped in it would be confiscated and you would be fined heavily. Steve

That chenille can be found at most fabric and craft stores. It's listed on Jo Anns website as well as hobby lobby. I would honestly tell these guys to go get bent and suck an egg if they want to be this way. It's not against the ruling of the FLW or BASS. Sounds to me more like they are trying to make their own rules to exclude certain people or use them when handy. I have fished in a couple tourneys before and never had an issue like that. On a related note I tie a salamander that works pretty well out of flit synthetic materials I can't post a picture because the mobile version of the site hates me and the classic version of the site from my mobile won't upload at all. That thing is sexier than socks on a rooster!!! Damn nice tie. Steve

Well I've been fishing carp for about 8 years. I've just redirected my focus of local fisheries. Shoebop, it's a simple and extremely fast way to tie any nymph but was originally developed by Charlie Brooks for a stone fly. Basically you tie it so it looks the same from every direction a smooth cylindrical body and no wing case. A simple 4-5 turns of hackle (soft or otherwise but I like soft) tied in where the thorax normally is tied at. I tie yet another variation of this style where instead of tying the thorax as normal and omitting the wing case I tie my hackle on just behind the eye of the hook. Caught a 28lb grassie on one tied in a size 6 in dark olive. Not to mention the dozens of other fish brought to hand by myself and my buddies. It's not a fly I think would sell because most anglers are far to closed minded to accept a concept such as this but as a tier I always have my eyes open to any and every possibility. I figured it was worth a shot so I added a dozen and a half to my box before season last year and I was quickly adding many more at every sitting behind my vise.

How many of you guys and gals out there tie nymphs in the round? I started using my larger patterns in the round last seasons for carp. I don't know if it was the increase of experience I had gained the year before or not but I caught a heck of a lot more and even bigger carp than I have before on those nymphs. I have been filling my carp boxes in between orders and I just can't stop tying these nymphs. I love the speed and simplicity of them and man they just fish great. Steve

I've been tying commercially for about 5 years now. I love talking with people. My favorite thing is to be on the water and talking to someone when they show me their fly and tell me where they got it and just how well it works for them. Then I tell them I'm the guy who tied it. It's a really great feeling to be helping someone catch fish. Steve

I fish almost nothing but barbless. it has nothing to do with the fish and everything to do with getting a hook out of myself or my friends/family more easily. IV caught and landed fish well in excess of 20lbs on barbless size 6 hooks. I've also dug barbed size 5/0 hooks out of my shoulder. The latter of those two really sucks a big one. Steve

Franken Shrimp, Tarpon Flies, and other Debauchery (pic heavy)
Steve P replied to Chefben4's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
You and me both chef. I rarely fish anything smaller than a size 6 and usually have some as bag as #1 in my box. Most of what I fish is either a #4 or a #6. -

I love these last shrimp. They look rather delicious. I'll surely be looking up a pattern for Franken shrimp later as I have found that shrimp flies transfer over into amazing carp flies. Steve -
Looks really good. Maybe a little a little full which may make it swim a little funny. Steve
