  1. So this is the conclusion, or 2nd day to my trip to Dolores Colorado, which was absolutely amazing! This time of year gives so many opportunities to catch fish, and pretty much every time I go out to Dolores I have a great time, and am usually successful. This trip was no exception to that. I caught a ton of fish! And had a great time with my good buddy Jeff.
  2. The Animas River is one of those rivers that you can either have the worst day fishing of your life, or the very best day fishing of your life. Very few days are in between that. Luckily, on this trip it was one of the better days fishing. The day started slow, with no bites, but once we found one run that held some nice fish, all of a sudden things started looking up. I hooked into a nice fish right off the bat at that spot, but lost it. However shortly after I hooked up again and brought in a nice rainbow. Then shortly after Jeff hooked up and brought in a nice rainbow as well, that had to be one of the most colorful rainbows Ive ever seen. Then Jeff hooked into a monster of a fish. Powerful and large! This took him over 16 minutes to bring in, and it was well over 24". Absolutely one of the better quality fish I have seen in one day. Definitely the best average of fish size on this river. http://youtu.be/clO_FD6bU74
  3. The San Juan River is fishable year round. I have caught many fish while its snowing out. The river is a tail water, so it does not freeze up, and the temperatures stay relatively the same all year round. The winter is one of my favorite seasons to fish at the Juan because the river isnt as pressured, and the larger fish come out. The lake also turns over usually in late December and the river becomes slightly off color. For that reason, you can fish larger nymphs and even do really well on streamers. No more fishing the really tiny midge patterns you are used to fishing in the spring and summer. I find that you can get away with size 20-22 midge patterns, 18-20 red annelid patterns and some smaller bunny leeches and other streamers as well. In fact, I really like to fish a streamer under an indicator and drop a red annelid behind it. Also, you want to fish a bit more flashy this time of year.
  4. Last episode I setup camp at the blue mesa escape camp ground, and went to fish the Gunnison river. I ended up getting dehydrated and almost didnt make it back. I only caught 2 fish, and both were rather small. I ended up going out to Gunnison to talk to the local fly shop, and got some advice for the river. And boy am I glad I did, because I caught some nice fish this trip! I started off nymphing with a large wire worm and small nymph. I hooked and landed a large wild rainbow trout. One of the prettiest I have ever seen. The colors were vivid, and it was very dark. A good fighter too. Hooking it on a small midge made the fight difficult however it was also very fun! I was so happy to get a fish so early on in the trip. A little later in the day, after fishing many spots with no success. I noticed the trout started hitting the top of the water. So I threw on a dry fly, and hooked a decent brook trout on the small adams dry fly. He was also very beautiful, with well defined spots. I started noticing some large moths on the water, and flying in the air. I didnt have any other large dry fly except a stimulator. So I threw that on, and hooked a really nice trout on that large dry fly. Overall I was very happy with the trip, an absolute great day on the water!
  5. Electra lake is an amazing lake in Southern Colorado. I saw fish stacked heavily, and they were all really nicely sized trout. It was almost too easy to catch them when they were there that thick. Just a blast of a day. http://youtu.be/58Fwrja7R0c
  6. Electra Lake is an awesome lake with some monster trout! It was Very easy to catch them, at least the day I went. They were stacked up in the river and inlets of the lake, and I was able to hook 4 fish in a 20-30 minute period. Just absolutely amazing fishing! Electra lake doesn't allow for wading into the lake, or for boats except for those run by the people who live on the lake. However, there is some great fishing from shore, and you won't be disappointed in the quality of these fish. Every fish I hooked was a good sized and colorful fish. If you haven't been there before, its well worth the $15 to fish the lake. Check it out!
  7. So I just got this new rod which is a 10' 3wt rod custom built by Midwest Custom Fly Rods. Its amazing! In many of my episodes I had trouble landing larger fish on these small 24-28 sized midges. I would always pull these small hooks right out of the fishes mouth. But now having a 10' light action rod, really helps me keep from putting too much pressure on the fish. I hooked 2 fish all day, and both were rather large. Unfortunately I did loose one of those fish, but that is still 50% for the day, so not too bad! Especially with these tiny midges. The fish I landed was about 18" and the one I lost I think was at least that, if not up to 20". Pretty fun day. The wind got really bad throughout the day, and I had to move to the braids in order to get out of the wind. There were times where I couldn't even get my fly line to stay on the water. Also there was tons of junk in the water. Mostly moss and algae, but some leaves and small twigs as well. I spent half the time cleaning my flies from this junk. So while I was able to land a great rainbow trout on a small midge which made it a great day, it was also a frustrating day as well. This was a Saturday, so it was really busy. Literally every spot was taken. I finally was able to find a few secluded spots away from people, but this took a lot of walking around.
  8. This is probably one of the more beautiful rivers I have ever fished. It is early in the year, so the trout aren't really feeding to vigorously. The bugs aren't hatching yet, and the real beauty of this river hasn't yet bloomed. I hear dry fly fishing in the spring, summer and fall is amazing! There are some really large browns in this river from what I hear. Also I am quite convinced that there are pike in that small lake after getting bit off twice. I will have to research a bit more to find out if they actually do have pike there. I will be heading back to the Dolores River soon for sure! Honestly I am not sure why they call it a "river" because its really small. Looks more like a creek to me. However maybe it gets wider further down the river. But either way, its very beautiful and peaceful there.
  9. So, the weather was miserable, and cold. We fished all morning in the snow without seeing the sun. Finally the sun came out, and we actually got a fish. Then the storm came again and we got caught in sleet, snow and some small hail on our way back to the car. Was the weather bad? Yes... Did we still have a great time? YES!!!. Don't ever give up on fishing just cause the weather doesn't look great. Bad weather fishing days can be some of the most memorable.
  10. Ok so, literally on the first cast, I hooked a fish and landed him. He wasn't huge, but still a great start to a day. I thought after that fish, that I would end up having a 20+ fish day, but that didnt happen. It took a lot of work and moving around to find more fish, not what I expected after the first few minutes of fishing.
  11. https://tieflycast.wordpress.com/2016/11/15/the-box-winter-steelhead/ 3 flies that I will not venture out into the cold without. How I tie them and tips to make the common patterns more successful for winter steelhead. This flies have been tried and tested on Erie, Huron, and Ontario tributaries while having some specific influence from Lake Michigan. I have put together a collection of thoughts and ideas as well as a few favorite patterns for winter steelhead flies for the Great Lakes region. Basically this post is a collection of concepts and patterns that I have had success with over the years. I know that most of the content will not be earth shaking for most of you, but I do appreciate the feedback I get from the members of this site. I tried much harder to get some 'animation' in my voice overs and dropped the banjo (for now). Take a look and give me some feedback, criticism, or a thumbs up if you like the content. It's greatly appreciated. Thanks Shane
  12. Everyone gets a little cabin fever this time of the year. Here is a video of some winter action on the Henry's Fork to help shake those feels a bit.
