I need to come up with a name for the deer hair packer that I will be marketing later this year. Some of you may have seen it already. I posted a preview on this forum a few months back(deer hair packer). I havent been able to come up with a name that I like. If I use the name you come up with I will give you one. So this would be more appropriate for those of you that tie deer hair bugs but this is open to anyone. When a winner is selected I will post the new name and the winners name. In case of duplicates the first one received will be the winner. Im looking for something easy to remember. Dont limit yourself to just one try. Just keep throwing names at me. I have to decide by the end of June or sooner if I get a name that just clicks. Some previous suggestions are: Clacker packer(it can make a clacking noise like a castanet) Perfection packer(sounds a bit arrogant) Master packer(same as above) Senseis hand Gator packer(looks like a gators mouth) The Stine packer Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am fairly new to tying flies and I have been tying lots of Clouser minnows to prep for the white bass run. I ventured off from tying a sparse pattern and tried to do a thick, perch clouser pattern. I did a base with bead chain eyes, a small clump of florescent orange, then a bit of olive green on top of that before flipping it over and tying in flash and another set of olive green. Towards the end of putting it all together with the last set of hair, the thread started to slip and rip from other parts that had been finished. Is there a way to prevent this? I had to untie a bunch of it and tie the last clump of hair further back to get it to all tie in together and I used a lot of head cement because I was unsure of how it will hold up in the water. I have attached a pic for reference of the end fly.

I have a complete elk hide and deer hide. I typically cut sections of deer hide and cure with borax. I now have elk to use as well. Can elk and deer be used interchangeably? I have two elk manes too. The hair is quite long and coarse. What applications could I use the elk main in? And will it take color like the deer hide. After I cure the deer hide I use koolaid to dye the hide. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've been getting into spinning deer hair lately and need a supplier for good quality dyed hair. So, where do you guys buy your hair from? I am looking for larger pieces (12x4) to (12x12) inches. I bought the large hareline "select" deer and it has a ton of fur. I know it would be ideal to go to my local shop but I live on an island and the closest shop (30 miles) has just a couple small pieces in stock. Thanks!

I have just finished tying up a few deer hair sculpins in size 6 for a planned attack on some local monster brown trout. I really enjoy tying with hair; but I got to wondering today, how many of us dabble in hair anymore? My bass popper go-to's are simple foam or cork jobs, though I have a collection of hair bugs too. I prefer to use hair/foam combos on my hoppers, and I enjoy fishing with the traditional hair muddler. So - who still uses hair anymore? Anyone get the same "kick" out of it that I do? Of course the creativity of all fly tying is why we're in this ...

I seem to be having two major problems when tying and spinning with deer hair. My first problem is when I spin deer hair the end result when I give my popper a haircut is that it doesn't have that tight compact deer hair look unless I cut the hair the extremely close to the shank of the hook. My second problem is when i go to whip finish my fly, I can't seem to keep the flared deer hair out of my finishing knot. Any help will be appreciated!
