Soft hackle swap. In the mail

Recommended Posts

I have read about various studies that show trout key on the air bubble that nymphs in transition blow to lift them to surface for their shuck discharge. I bought these fringe beads a few years ago for a different purpose and this idea just popped into my head. If they want to key on the air bubble I'll make it easy for them. I'm not even sure about size of bead but may be 2mm. The fly is a design of Red Butt with a UV lump to stand out better and herl body. The hackle is woodcock since I need to order another partridge skin. It is on a barbless #14 and I really hope it might work out and give me a design I can actually call my own name and not just a variant. Well, I guess it is a Red Ass Kelso variant that will definitely be different from Woodenlegs.

I like it, looks good. Some good triggers with a touch of red, air bubble, and soft hackle movement.  Definitely something different for the fish to see.

Call it  Szabo's Red Ass and Glass Soft Hackle.

Thank you. I get officially shortened to "Nick's Red Ass and Glass".

I used the "inside of a Woodcock's wing".  The #1 hook referred to is the same as a modern size 14.

I've never been sure why the two colors of silk.  I usually use only green, but went with the "as specified" for these swap flies.

Tracking number available if needed.

My flies went out today, should see them Thursday. These ae the first flies I've tied since rotator cuff surgery in Dec...  I was a little sore so took a couple sessions... new stretching seemed to help.
