Totally cool. Looks like it'll still be "a killing fly"

I can't imagine it not catching fish depending on the day.  It certainly looks buggy-  I believe the original was meant to be a dry fly but I think I'll fish it in the surface film down to a few inches, soft hackle or emerger style.

Looks to me like any way you fish it will be effective.

CHARLES COTTON’S BLACK FLY

That looks great just as it is, but also lots of possibilities by changing colors up a bit.

Another classic that catches fish and is in my fly box.  I love the history behind these old flies, check this out.

Gary Borger's favorite size for the Griffith's Gnat is a size 14 which surprised me since I thought a smaller size would be more effective.

Here's some that he gave me. I had him sign the box since I am keeping them intact.

Berger's Deer Hair Hex - Designed by William Berger of Flatrock, Michigan in the mid 1950's to be fished during the hex hatch.  NOTE: The though the body has a crosshatched thread rib, the tail is separately wrapped so that the fly's length can be cut to adjust the fly's length.

Hook - Mustad 94840, 10

Thread - black

Body - natural deer hair, tied parallel and extended front and back

Rib - black thread tied crisscross

Wings - extended deer hair body butts, tied spent

Hackle - flared deer hair

Tail - extended deer body hair, tied in segments with separate thread wraps

NOTE:  Though this fly is made up of only two bunches of deer hair it is NOT an easy tie!  It'll take a few tries to get the proportions right.

Interesting Silver, In the Northeast the preferred size for most of us is a 18 -20 at least when imitating midges or midge clusters.  I'm told the bugs are bigger on western rivers so a 14 would make sense if the midges run that size?  Or maybe the fish are taking it a general attractor?  -It is buggy looking and in a 14 could represent a lot of different types of insects.
