June Flies From the Vise

Michigan Night Caddis - Designed by Art Winnie in the 1920's.  It was named "caddis" and the name has stuck over the years even though this is a pattern for the nighttime Hexagenia limbata mayfly hatch.

I should be finishing packing and taking care of my "honey do" list before leaving tomorrow for church camp...but instead I'm adding some last minute flies to the box 🤷.

This pattern, from Taylor Streit, is used on the Rio Grande in late November to represent a cluster of midges. The fly is very effective when these small flies are grouped together for “mating.”

Many years ago, I fished a fly similar to this one but with a cream dubbed fur body and grizzly hackle on the Green River in Utah. That was one of my better days of fly fishing!

Striper 2022 has come to a close. Time for some furry, fuzzy and twitchy things for smallmouth. Actually, every year I say I’m going to target carp but I never do. Fortunately carp flies and smallmouth bass flies seem to be the same thing. All are tied on 2/0 eagle claw jig hooks with your basic  zonker strips, chenille, lead dumbbell eyes, uni wire, and maybe an estaz collar. I really have to follow through with my desire to fly fish for carp. One of these days.
