June Flies From the Vise

Here is a Flex Hex that I tied. The wing still needs to be trimmed.

Nice looking fly, Silver.  I think we have Hexes here SE PA, at least I haven't heard of them.  The only time I've run into them have been on my trips to NE Ontario and it's always been the case of you should have been here last week.  Apparently, the smallmouth and walleye went nuts on them and would take small top water bugs or poppers after dark.  I did run into a hatch off of Lake Nippissing the night before I arrived at the lodge when I was staying at a motel near the lake.  It was impressive.  The closest thing we have in size is the Eastern Green Drake which is normally tied on a size 8 2xl hook.  I think the pattern would work well for the Green Drake hatch.

Mentioned on Sunday that I'd recently tied up a selection of small flies for baby tarpon  - and that the ones we're using right now are mostly white in color... Here's a photo of what we're using...  They range from a size #4 all the way up to a size #1...

D1xFLJe.jpg

ready to go individually sleeved with barbs mashed down...

kbxtLoc.jpg

the first column includes two Minno-mites (a size 1/0, and size #1), then a Crystal Schminnow (my version) in size #4, the middle column are all small Seaducers in size #2, the last column are an assortment of SpeedBugs in size #1... Note that every one has a wire weedguard with the exception of the poppers -and I'd have a weedguard on those if I could figure out a way that didn't compromise their movement in the water...  This time of year I favor very light colors all summer long - then go to darker colors as we move into fall and then winter...

Spent Poly Winged Caddis - Tom Deschaine states that Michigan is laying claim to this pattern even though no one knows who first tied it!  It was first tied in the 1990's and can still be found in some Michigan fly shops and he says that he has not this pattern anywhere else in this country.
