Looking for hook substitution

Recommended Posts

When tying poppers, I don’t like using the kinked shank popper hooks. I had someone recommend using a Gamakatsu B10 Stinger. I generally use size 6 and 8 on poppers. Anyone know of a suitable substitute for the Gamakatsu hooks. Have nothing against them, just want some options. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Not advise just what I do.  Take it for what it’s worth .  I’ve taken worm hooks which are bendable an altered to accept cork bodies.   Most of my big poppers I sometimes don’t even do thread wraps.  That helps when using straight shanks.  Most of mine are on Mustad 3407 not SS but coated.  The large sizes , 7/0, have kinda flat side which helps.  Never had a durability problem but they are consumable in purpose.  I’ve made some that the body slides along the shank to click as well as pop.  CA glue repeat until all voids are filled and lotta times wait till next day.  Have been known to wrap thread around the bodies and whip finish to squeeze the cork. Coat with CA.  Especially on balsa cuz it splits so easily.  I use Solarez on coatings sometimes but cheaper with SallyHansenHardAsNails. UV doesn’t harden well in cracks  where lite doesn’t penetrate.  Good Luck

I have not used any of these and I'm not sure if they all have the hook sizes you want, but I would call all of these 'stinger' hooks similar to the B10.

Mustad c52

Mustad 3366

Daiichi 2720

Dairiki 810

Orvis 8810

TMC 8089

Saber 7060

Sierra S19 (on the auction site only, AFAIK)

I had someone on another media page said Ahrex Nordic Salt Light Stinger. Said they really liked them. Didn’t know if those were saltwater hooks and if they were, could they be used in freshwater situations.

Generally, I use 2xl or 3xl long straight shank hook for my poppers.  I prefer a round bend.  I haven't used the B10S for poppers.   I've used the Daiichi 2461, Eagle Claw Aberdeen hook, Mustad 3777(this one has to be straightened), Ahrex Trout Predator Long.  Most of the Ahrex hooks can be used in fresh or salt water.  Mostly I use sliders and spiders for panfish, but they're tied on size 6 long shank hooks.  These are some of the poppers I'm taking to Canada this week.  Smallmouth are the main targets.

Denduke, Lake Tangipahoa? Where is that? Sounds familiar.

“SW M’isipi “.  PercyQuinn state park, should be your back yard???  We stayed in a cabin couple months after the lake renovation.  The lakes get hammered bass wise but that place should be a bream Mecca bout now?

Yep. I am in Brookhaven. Been many years since I fished it. I like small creeks or at least the ones I can wade.

They are marketed as saltwater hooks, but that wouldn't stop me from using them in freshwater if I like them and they fit the application.

That’s kinda what I was thinking. Probably gonna get a good selection from your list, if they are available in the sizes I need. Tie up a couple with each one and try’em out.
