Thank you for the kind words - I was simply following Robert Smith's youtube pattern.  If your not familiar with Smith he's from England and he prides himself on tying old English flies like these that exactly replicate the original patterns but on modern hooks so no cat gut.  This is problematic because some patterns call for feathers that are from birds which are now protected.  He states that he has a large collection of protected feathers that were obtained by purchasing antique fly tying materials or decorated clothing through estate sales. Fortunately for the rest of us he often does recommend legal substitutes. 

  This tie is a little weird (at least for me) in that you tie in materials from the head of the fly to the rear.    Not difficult but just not what I'm used to.

Your biot placement looks perfect on that one, that can be hard to do.  Nice fly!

Winter's Hope (Matuka style)

Hook: Allen SS001 #2/0

Thread: White 6/0 (Red 6/0 for the head)

Body: Silver tinsel (mylar)

Rib: Oval silver tinsel

Tail/Wing: Saltwater neck hackle (2 orange, 2 yellow)

Hackle: Whiting American cape (blue), Saltwater neck (purple)

Head: 1 layer of red 6/0 over white thread

That looks great. 

I just started tying that style (matuka).  Tough to keep the hackle centered on top while being mindful of not trapping any hackle, and at the same time keeping the rib evenly spaced.  Lots going on with each wrap - LOL

I just started this style as well! I love the large profile and how it stays really sparse...I'm learning a few tricks along the way...like pinning the rib on the bottom of the fly with my left pinky finger while separating the wing fibers at the stem with a bodkin and applying forward pressure...then, using left thumb and fore finger to grab the tail and apply rearward pressure to the hackle stems while wrapping the rib through the wing fiber gap...still working on it...I might toss an SBS out there at some point

The canyon is Mack's Canyon on the Deschutes.  However it is called the Max Canyon on Doug Stewart's website.  

I would have had better heads if I split the wings with hackle

Fished one with a shoulder of dyed pheasant rump the other day and it did better than a big orange foam thing, which was a bit surprising, since that’s been a standard for cutts.

Thanks but It took two attempts on the wing. If you look you will see the dents in the biots from the first attempt which fell a little short. I never tied them with such a long hook. Salvaged hook so I don’t know what it was exactly. I’m thinking it will be an excellent deep stonefly imitation.
