Maggot-1080.jpg

Maggot

Hook - Mustad 3906B, size 12-16

Thread - Black (White thread under the body)

Shell - Dark brown duck quill section over entire body*

Body - Light cream latex**

Hackle - Dark brown as a wet fly collar

Remarks: It is suggested that an under body of white floss or thread be wound forward before the latex; otherwise, the black thread may show through the body.

*I substituted black pheasant tail fibers. Note: This could be eliminated completely if desired

**I substituted cream colored wonder wrap (span flex) for the latex

Gartside-Philo-Caddis-Emerger-1080.jpg

Philo Caddis Emerger

Jack Gartside

Hook - Curved caddis, size 12-20

Thread - To match or compliment body color

Rib - Pearl krystal flash

Body - Blend of squirrel, rabbit and basal fluff from a gamebird feather

Wing/thorax - Pheasant aftershaft feather (may be clipped on top)

Antennae - Two strands of barred wood duck flank, extending past the hook bend

Remarks: This effective design by Jack Gartside may more appropriately belong in the section on caddis pupae and larvae. However, because of its name, and its slightly different structure, it is listed here with other emergers.

Betters' Haystack (brown)

IMG20221025211250a.jpg

Hook: #14

Thread: orange, 6/0 (really should use 8/0)

Wing: fine deer hair

Tail: woodchuck tail (original used fine deer hair, I like woodchuck tail.  It's relatively fine, wirey, won't waterlog, and has nice cream ends with some black tipping.   And they are wicked cheap)

Body: dyed black snowshoe foot under fur, tan kapok, FTD Arctic snow - brown (2:1:1)

Dusty Miller - Hairwing

Salmon Fly

Hook - Mustad 36890, Partridge salmon or equivalent, size 2-10

Thread - Black

Tag - Oval silver tinsel

Tip - Yellow floss

Tail - A golden pheasant crest, over which red hackle fibers half as long

Butt - Black ostrich herl

Ribbing - Fine oval silver tinsel

Body - Rear two-thirds, embossed silver tinsel; front third orange floss

Throat - Natural guinea hen fibers, beard style

Wing - A sparse mixed bunch of orange, red, and yellow polar bear or calf tail, over which a small bunch of natural brown bucktail or red fox squirrel tail fibers

Topping - A golden pheasant crest feather

Cheeks - Jungle cock eyes (second eye showing)

REMARKS: This pattern is among those derived from the classics which may show variations in the hair wing version due simply to the tyer’s translation from the original. It uses more than the usual number of materials found in a hair wing pattern and thus serves well as a model for similar techniques used in other salmon flies.

This is one recipe amongst others. Find one that suits you.

I really sucked on this one. Setting the golden pheasant crest is a bitch. I'll need more practice

A little soft hackle fly I tied with guidance from my LT over facetime, he sent me these feathers and a hare's mask (i didn't realize just what that meant until I opened the package). I think they're partridge he said. I misplaced my head cement so I used a double whip finish to keep it secure.
