January Flies from The Vise

Recommended Posts

Tried some of these carp flies I ran across.  Only got grass carp around here but they looked buggy.  Nothing much to them.  Cut the fork outa a breast feather for tail, lil dubbing, wrap one side of what’s left of the feather behind bead chain eyes tied on the back of the hook. One feather,  dubbing, chain bead....

Hardy's Gold Butcher

Winged Wet Fly

Hook - Mustad Heritage S80AP
Thread - Black
Tail - Goose shoulder or quill dyed red
Ribbing - Gold wire
Body - Gold tinsel
Hackle - Dyed hot orange hen
Wing - Natural mallard quill

The butcher range of flies have been around for years, and account for many fish throughout the season. Great for browns, rainbows and works well for sea trout and even salmon in low water conditions. The Hardy's Gold Butcher is the only one in the series that abandons the mallard blue wings.

Those look good, DD.  I tie something similar for bass and panfish to imitate a dragonfly nymph, but I'm curious as to what makes a carp fly, a carp fly?

I don't really target carp.  I'm pretty sure I hooked into one last year on a warm water river I was fishing. I broke him off after a 15 minute fight without seeing him once.  The current was kinda fast, not where I would expect a carp to be, but I don't really know.

I always chuckle when I read about carp and carp fishing with flies. When I was a kid...a lot of years ago...we fished for carp in a local stream (Crum Creek) with dough balls and always managed to catch carp. There was the added catfish or sunfish in the mix as well. We thought of them as trash fish, but that apparently isn't the case anymore. I've never tried for them with flies, and I understand they can be very tough to fool...a combination of spooky and smart.

That's a boatload of nice bugs.  Do you go through that many in a season, or are you tying for others.

I like the Peacock caddis better with elk hair.

They both look great.  I prefer the deer hair though, for the colors and the thinner hair fibers.  I have some elk, but almost never tie with it.
