Gene L 0 Report post Posted February 25 Yes. It's not designated as the No 1, since that didn't happen until the No 2, which is also marked the same way.
niveker 0 Report post Posted February 26 I did not know that, thank you Gene.
Gene L 0 Report post Posted February 26 I lied. My No 1 isn't marked, the No 2 is marked on the cast iron. Not enough cast iron on the 1 to letter it.
Mars Rover 0 Report post Posted February 27 That vise appears to be a Crest "Custom" model. Those old vises are well made with good materials and are nicely finished. They operate smoothly and are capable of monstrous hook holding power. There is a current (or more recent) Crest line of fly tying tools, but I don't think there is any connection to the old Crest Tool and Supply company that made these in California USA. chugbug27 0 Report post Posted February 27 Alright! Wow. Thanks Mars Rover. Impressed!... I knew it wasn't from outer space (thank you for that, too, Mike)
Jaydub 0 Report post Posted February 27 Thanks Rover, I knew I had seen that vise before, but I couldn't remember who made it. I was more familiar with the lever operated Crest, which I remember as a sturdy alternative to the Thompson A.

niveker 0 Report post Posted February 28 Wow that's great info @Mars Rover. Like Jaydub, Chug's vise looked vaguely familiar to me but I couldn't find an exact match in all my searching. Thompson made a similar vise with the T-handle, but the shape of the jaws were very different.
