Weird hookup

Recommended Posts

Out this am getting some gills on various flies. On one cast a swallow took the fly and went about 25 feet before dropping it. I then
caught an 8 inch bass.

I've caught bats with my fly when fishing at night.

I've also hit swallows with my fly rod while fishing the San Juan River. the hatches are so heavy, they lfy over the river eating the flying bugs.

The words "Weird Hookup" sounds like something that should be in "The Lodge" Maybe a little risque even for there. :)

I once caught a bat up in Vermont, thank goodness for barbless hooks as he released himself flopping around on the ground. Had a beaver get tangled in my leader while he was swimming below the surface and I had to cut my line, thought I had a monster bass on for a second.  Hooked a goose on the back-cast once, lost my Clouser on that one too.  I've come pretty close to catching a few Waxwings while we all enjoyed a sulfur hatch. Never had anything deliver my fly right to a fish, but believe me I could use the help.

I once caught a cormorant while fishing a strong tidal river current, hooked the poor bird in the wing on the underwater swing and had one hell of a fight. it was summertime I was in t shirt and shorts wet wadding had to take my shirt off and cover the birds head to unhook it. We, the bird and I were completely exhausted after the ordeal, and I sat on the rocks watching him swim off.

I was casting a spoon off a rock into Lake Superior in the harbor for Erie Mining and had just made a long cast and started reeling. I was watching a couple of ducks (no idea what kind) flying just above the water at about d100 mph. Suddenly my rod slammed down and one of the poor ducks kind of tumbled end over end and landed in the water. He kind of had a dazed look and paddled in a circle for a minute, gained his bearings and flew off none the worse for his experience that he could tell all the rest of the flock later that day.

If you caught the bass on the same cast the swallow carried away your fly it would really be a story. Was it?

I've caught a bat or two but the weirdest critter I saw caught was by my wife.  She had a dragonfly grab her fly mid-cast and try and take off.  Foul hooked the poor bug.

In our state we are required to immediately release anything that is foul-hooked. You? :)

Things foul hooked are released.  Wish we could get the salmon snaggers to do the same.  As for the insect flying fortress: It was shaken off as it was flying around freaking my wife out.  Wish we could of got a pic with it.
