joelietz 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2010 Thanks for this chart - it's really useful! I've been trying to figure this out myself! I'm new to making my own flies but so far it's pretty rewarding and it's fun looking for materials at various craft stores that I can make use of. Tons of fun! Oh, I discovered an online source that sells nice little tins that I can use for holding my flies too. They consider themselves a supplier of soap making supplies but their containers can serve other purposes as well. Steve... according to my Kaufman catalogue... 1/16"....1.5mm ....20-26 5/64th" ...2.0 mm 16-20 3/32" .....2.3mm 14-18 7/64" .... 2.8mm 12-16 1/8" .....3.3mm 10-14 3/16" ...3.8mm 6-10 3/16" ....4.8mm 2-8 1/4" .....6.4mm 1/0-4 Hope this helps you. errol 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2011 Id try staying with the beads from fly fishing shops. I've tried the ones from the craft stores, and they wont work. They're not recessed so you cant get them around the bend of the hook. Although if you could ream an end out it may possibly work. 6/0and 8/0 ToHo seed beads fit many of the small hooks up to size 10. large packages on Ebay Cheap. I buy Glass only. madmike98 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2011 try the craft isle at wal mart they have a large selection of glass beads cheap. they give your fly a different look that the fish probably havent seen.
michiganborn 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2012 I often use craft store glass beads. I kinda like the inconsistencies, a "nothing in nature is perfect" kind of thing. Not only that but I can get 500 for like $3 lol
Piker20 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2012 Can I check the BIG hole in the bead faces back from the eye and its meant to be pushed up onto the dressing behind?? Some of the sea fishing fluro beads can be forced round the hook, easier with barbless. They are cheap as chips and don't affect the weight but produce a good hot spot

KOKOEK9 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2013 got a question, all of the fly tying beads have a counter sunk side. can you use a standard bead that doesn't have the counter sunk hole
riffleriversteelheadslayer 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2013 got a question, all of the fly tying beads have a counter sunk side. can you use a standard bead that doesn't have the counter sunk hole yes but the counter sunk hole makes it easier to put on the hook

flytire 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2013 all of the fly tying beads have a counter sunk side. not all fly tying beads have a countersunk hole. some have slotted holes to supposedly work better with these new 60 degree jig hooks. slotted hole bead can you use a standard bead that doesn't have the counter sunk hole i'm not sure what you consider a "standard" bead but it would be hard to find beads that are not countersunk. the countersunk/counterbored hole makes it easier for the bead to go around the bend countersunk bead counterbored bead plastic or seed beads from craft stores are not countersunk but will also go around the bend depending on hook style
