the " reverse mystery box " landed at my doorsteps this week, as usual, there were some great looking flies to go thru." mystery box 3 " should be heading this way very soon. I will be making adjustments on both mailing sequences, trying to key on locations for less distances for mailing. I haven't gotten any feedback on the other " mystery box", sent a message or two, but so far, no response. my intent is to have 2 boxes for the next cycle, when the third box arrives , I should be able to work something out.

we should have about 14 tyers for cycle 5, any interested new tyers can figure about 2 months or so for the next cycle.

here's hoping trent and will are starting to manuever a lot better. hopefully mother nature gives us a break or two.

have a good one

I got box 1 (?) last Thursday. I'm in Louisville, KY, and this past Saturday was the Kentucky Derby. For those not familiar, there is a 2 week festival leading up to the Derby, and the Friday before Derby (Kentucky Oaks Day) and Derby Day are holidays in Louisville. Schools and businesses are closed. Local tv stations broadcast all day from Churchill Downs. Most locals don't go to the track... we have Derby Parties. We had about 15 guests Saturday and I hickory smoked pork ribs.

So it took me a day or two to go through the flies and add mine. The box is headed home today.

Yes, you read that right.... a 2 week festival for a 2 minute horse race! Hundreds of events and activities! An event 136 years old is steeped in tradition!

mel,it sounds as though you had a great couple weeks. thanks for the update .

I will need to step aside as swapmeister, so hopefully someone will be able to take over as the swapmeister. As mentioned in a recent posting, I have the reverse mystery box and mystery box 3 should be landing at my doorsteps in a few days. Still don't have any idea where the other box is located. In the last couple days, I have heard from will and kerusso and they won't be part of the next cycle, that means there will be 12 tyers for the next cycle.

I will hold the boxes and wait for some input, keep the 2 boxes in circulation or combine the 2 boxes?

Sorry for having to step aside, the "mystery swap ' has been an ongoing swap for a few years. I have been able to have some great dialog with you and the fly tying talents has been something else. Seeing the awesome selection of flies from all over the country has made this a special format. Thanks for sharing.

have a good one

Hi Pat,

Hope you and the family are doing well and not the reason for you stepping down. You have done a great job with this swap. I believe I'm in line in a while for the reverse box. So I'm looking forward to that. Haven't tied anything for quite a while however I think I have some time.

Thanks again Pat.

Mel, I look forward to the Derby every year and understand and have heard all that goes on the period beforehand. It is amazing!!!!

Now the Preakness.

Steve

great hearing from you steve, the reverse box and the mystery box 3 both have a great slection of flies, but that doesn't surprise me , this swap is loaded with talent!!

rich5665 has agreed to take over as meister, so the mystery swap is in good hands. I may be partial, but the mystery swap , has by far, been my favorite format, and having you all on board has been great.

this old, old man is ready to head to the pasture.

stay tuned for more details.

Once everything has been worked out, I'll let everyone know when Cycle 5 of the swap will start. We have one box still out and about and two have found their way home to Pat. Should we continue with three boxes or drop back down to two? Or Do we just go with a bigger box.

In the words of Scotty "This is Xciting!!"

mystery swap box 3 made its way to southern california, the quality and selection of flies were outstanding. I most definitely latched on to some good un's. cencalfly, I realy appreciate your help getting this box up and running!!!, keep me aware of our favorite neck of the woods,YOSEMITE AND THE SIERRAS!!

rich, I should be able to have the fies separated in one box. All the addresses will be included. Again there are 12 tyers on the list. Should be able to have the box mailed out in a couple days.Be prepared for some greeat flies. If the other box heads this way, it will be passed on to you.

"mystery swappers", it has been one great experience!!!

have a good one

Hey Pat, Remember this conversation from last year? I think we hit the moon with this one. Lets see where we're at; CYCLE 5 set to luanch, up to 3 boxes rotating, and the offshoot mystery material swap in its second cycle. :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: That's where we're at. Thanks to you.

I was wondering, how many trips does the box go around? Is there a previous record that we can attempt to break? I'm game for as many round trips as possible.

cencafly,

It's my understanding the box will be in motion as long as we keep it in motion. This particular swap has a beautiful format... Pat Carrol is probably the best swapmeister I've ever swapped with.

... As for setting a record ....... how much fun would it be for the swap to go so long that we actually have a difficult time thinking of a different/new pattern to submit. You've challenged us, in a way, to break a record. I say "Let's do it". Just about anyone can tie a dozen flies over the course of three months. Yeah man, let's keep this thing going for YEARS

emphasis added

The last "mystery swap" made three and a half cycles...

...We have a great group of tyers. Lets shoot for the moon!!!

Have a good one

Pat Carroll

kerusso called it, you are the best swapmeister. I'm sure rich will do a fine job but we're going to miss you running the show. As for Yosemite and the Sierras, you bet. Right now - over 6000cfs in the Merced, the Falls are awsome (all of them), the valley is green, and the dogwoods are starting to bloom.

I received the Flies from Pat today, all nicely packed into one box  I'm going to split the box into two boxes, the first will go out on Monday, the second will go out after I shuffle the names up a bit. After going through the box only four didn't have tags. I'll set these aside for donation to Casting for Recovery in a tin. If you wish to add to the tin please feel free to do so. Oh ya, before I forget, I'm not going to tell you who is going to be getting a box first. :P So be on the look out.

Pat - Thank you for restarting and hosting this swap, it has been a blast.

:headbang: :headbang: the box has made it to the west. Getting ready to go through it tonight. Should have it back in the mail Wednesday morning.

Went out camping this past weekend and the box was waiting for me when i got back. This Guy had some luck. I had little time to react so it's not a very good picture but still cool to see.

From the area we camped looking past Kings Canyon toward the high country. Winter is hanging on there. More snow last night above 8000'
