Guest Report post Posted March 10, 2004 More questions about Tampa I'm gonna start getting some Saltwater hooks and was wondering what size hooks should I be getting for Clousers and Deceivers for fly fishing in Tampa. From what TroutBum said I will be getting chasing Reds, Snook and possibly Tarpon.
flytyer 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2004 I tied up some shrimp for the guys that I was telling you about at "The Fishing Authority" that they are going to use for reds, snook and tarpon. The biggest size that I tied was a 1/0. I questioned them on this and they said that the 1/0 was plenty big enough for the tarpon. With that said, 1/0 to 2 would be a good choice. Jim and Matt can give you better information than me so send them an emai land see wht they say. Hope this helped.
Guest Report post Posted March 10, 2004 Will, 1/0 is a little small for Tarpon, 3/0 Owner Aki hooks are the standard around here. The guides flytyer mentions are not known around here as fly fishing specialists, so I would take their recommendation with a good dose of skepticism. As for the Snook, Redfish, etc. #4 thru #1 are about right.
Guest Report post Posted March 11, 2004 My standard Hooks...give or take some in other sizes .... are 1/0, 2/0 and 3/0.
CaptEd221 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2004 For reds and line siders I have gone smaller over the years. I was tying up clousers on 1/0 and went down to 2 and 4 for reds and the same for snook, I have also tried a night snook light fly that is on a size 6. For my minnow flies I'm using all 2 for all. I don't go out to target tarpon but I have a few on, not boated but on. here is clousers I tyed up for a local shop size 2.

flyingbones76 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2004 Thanks for the response CaptEd. The local fly shop I go to down here in Miami carries plenty of that material in all sorts of colors but I just couldn't tell what it was from the picture. Going to have to pick some up and start experimenting. Thanks again......

flyingbones76 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2004 Just looked through the site capt. GREAT looking flies. Very impressive. I really like the baboon fly. It looks like something the bonefish would just love.
CaptEd221 0 Report post Posted March 28, 2004 Tony, The guide who came up it, because he could not get red fish to hit a fly that just sat in front of him, and that is what he came up with. Try it in tan body and tan tail made out of polor fiber, realy soak the yarn with head cement to almost make it hard. I have been tying them in brown for the winter reds over here. Good Luck
