How well do you know your aquatic critters?

Recommended Posts

I made up a neat little quiz to see how well most people know their bugs. (Well, they're not all technically bugs, which is why I say critters!) Post your guesses before you peek at the answers... let's see who does best. smile.gif

When you're done guessing see how well you did here: http://www.troutnut.com/otherpics/quiz1/answers.html

Let me know if you'd like to see more of these... I could cook up a pretty tough all-mayfly quiz if people want to try their hand at that. smile.gif

#3 looks like a scud to me..... (amphipoda)

#7 looks to be some sort of trichoptera.... maybe some sort of phryganeidae ?

#15 I just always called em Giant water bugs... i don't know of the scientific name or whether or not that is the actual name of em.

#18 is a sowbug.... once again, not the greatest with latin names.

#20 is a dragonfly larva.... odonata I believe.

I wrote 'em all down before I viewed the following posts. Forgive the lack of latin. I never really saw the need to know THAT much about bugs as a fly-fisherman. Here's what I came up with. Not too great.

1.) walking stick

2.) golden stone

3.) scud

4.) helgramite

5.) mayfly nymph (green drake??)

6.) no idea

7.) some type of cased caddis larvae

8.) Midge pupa??

9.) water boatman

10.) damsal-fly nymph

11.) Mayfly nymph (no idea what kind)

12.) ???

13.) ???

14.) maybe a hex nymph?

15.) ???

16.) Mayfly nymph (no idea what kind)

17.) ???

18.) what the hell is that????

19.) BWO nymph

20.) dragonfly nymph
