pmjasper 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 Ok, I'll admit that I can't tie one of the simplest flies out there so I could use some help. When it comes to Glo bugs, there are two main materials I have used...the glo yarn and chinelle. Now with the glo yarn, I have read how it is tied to the hook in the middle, pulled tight, move the thread to the front of the hook to tie off and then trim the yarn but I can never seem to get a tight round egg looking pattern as I have seen in the fly shops. I usually use two pieces of yarn on the top and two on the bottom, each about an inch long but when I'm done it just looks like a loose mess. Therefore, how does one get a nice tight glo bug with yarn? Secondly, I have used chinelle to tie glo bugs and find it a bit easier with one problem. I start out by tying the end of the chinelle to the hook and wrapping it around. I apply one or two wraps on the end, three to four in the middle (to get the egg shape) and one or two near the eye of the hook. When I'm done the eggs looks pretty good and is fairly tight but after a few fish the middle wraps slide to the back and thus ruin the pattern. Therefore, my question is how do I create a solid egg pattern with chinelle without having it unravel after a few hits? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. bwo3 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 When i tie glo bugs i just put the yarn around the whole shank of the hook then wrap the the thread tightly around it. Its the easiest way to tie them, you will have to a little more yarn though
oatka 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 DAY5 hopefully day5 will chime in with the link i can't find. but, he has a good how to on how he makes satellite eggs. basically you thread your glo bug yarn through a straw and have just about 1/8 of an inch out of one end of the straw and then tie the yarn (still through the straw) to the hook. then, pull back all the yarn and wrap a few times in front of the yarn and whip finish it. then, pull about 2/8 (or even more) more yarn out but cut it at about 1/8 inch from the thread wraps. this should produce a fairly nice shaped egg. you want to make sure you pull out more yarn then you are going to cut, otherwise your yarn is right at the end of the straw and you can't grab it to start the next fly. plus, with this method there is very little waste! matt, got the link? Greg G. 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 Try Mcflyfoam....it is alot easier instead of yarn
VERN-O 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 Ray letumgo has the ultimate in glo bugs (IMHO)......dubbing brush and a partridge hackle.....check it out under his flies
letumgo 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2007 pmjasper - Here is a shortcut to the "Partridge Egg" pattern I posted earlier this summer. The metal wire core should make this pattern sink faster and make it very durable. http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?sho...c=27249&hl= (Thanks VERN-O for the compliment. Glad you liked the pattern.)
Pelhament 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2007 I found the best way to get them tight looking is to take a lighter to them after you trim them into shape. It melts down any loose ends and really brings the yarn together. It makes the fly more versatile as well. I hooked 7 steelies on the same glo bug last weekend, and while the thread broke and egg was sliding up and down the hook shank it held its form and stayed on the hook.
