Redwings1 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 depending on the length there are lots of uses. two favorites are to spin and trim it like deer hair for a nice dense head. longer hair is great as streamer hair.
Guest Report post Posted January 29, 2008 It could probably make a interesting dubbing as well. Most of what you see in the shop is lamb's wool, and I don't know if Sheep's (adult) wool maintains the same properties or not. Lamb's wool soaks up water like a sponge and that's why it's the primary ingredient for my sculpin patterns. If Sheep wool does the same then yeah, dub your big nymphs and crawdads with it, and make some sculpin/goby patterns too.
rockworm 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 viper You are talking about unspun wool? I use a lot of wool yarn, mostly for bodies and tails on wet and salmon flies. On occassion I will chop up some yarn and use it for dubbing, mostly for wet flies and nymphs. Are you lucky enough to have access to different colours/shades of wool? I find the natural greys and browns are very good for nymphs and larvae. And the natural off-white makes a great maggot!
