Deer Hair Bug

Recommended Posts

Thats not a bad start, try using a double sided razor to trim the hair, it makes a smoother look on the bug.

For some constructive criticism I would first try to pack the hair a little tighter. This will help keep the fly buoyant, especially with a heavy hook. Also, trim the underneath slightly closer to the hook shank to give you a bit more gap room.

For a first attempt that is incredibly well done!

Very good first hair bug. Agree that packing needs to be tighter, but it's easier after the first attempt. My very first was much worse, I still have it. Good work.

Hi Rob

I was just rereading the Chris Helm (the guru of deer hair) interview in

the May 2006 issue of Hatches. Chris says that even more important

than packing the hair is using the right amount of hair/clump. If it is too sparse

no amount of packing will give you a nice tight body.

You might want to give the article a read.
