Guest Report post Posted June 30, 2004 I noticed a difference in my flies as soon as I started with tying with 8.0 instead of 6.0 thread. I have a less of a tendency to crowd the eye of the hook. Proportions look much better. Only down side is, now I have to buy all new colors in 6.0 thread. Guess I'll be placing an order soon on GreenCaddis.com Anyone else ever make the switch..? Guest Report post Posted June 30, 2004 Usually on 12's and bigger I use 6/0 smaller 8/0, except with parachutes I always use 6/0 on those. Just my comfort level at this stage in my tying. Fatman
Guest Report post Posted June 30, 2004 For tiny dries I'll use 8/0 or even 10/0, salmon flies 6/0 and most saltwater flies 3/0.
Carlin 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2004 I fully agree! I too switched to 8/0 and will never go back. The only time I size up is when I'm tying spun deer hair patterns and some flesh flies when I need the extra tension that 8/0 can't handle - I'll even go with kevlar thread for some. Also, I think the 8/0 holds better as I have never had a fly come untied while using the thinner thread. I've never tried 10/0, but I guess that's next as the thread really builds up quickly on those super-tiny midges. Good thing I don't need to tie those up very often! Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2004 I use both 6/0 & 8/0 i like the 8 but with my big monkey hands i tend to break it alot SD
Guest Report post Posted June 30, 2004 I use mostly 8/0 in my trout flies, but when I am tying with foam I have to use 6/0. I can not seem to get enough tension to hold the foam where I want it with 8/0. john
Guest Report post Posted June 30, 2004 i'm using some 12/0 bennechi thread for everything that I don't need thread buildup or have to spin deerhair. its just what i have gotten used to, and if in fact I do have a minor screw up I can always go back and lash down some more without getting a big bulky thread buildup. quick edit, ridderbos is right on, I do use 6/0 on most of the flies that use foam or latex cuz you really need to lash it down tight to keep it where you want. steve
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2004 12/0 Steveo when ya came by a few weeks ago i must not have noticed your little girl hands
Guest Report post Posted June 30, 2004 girly hands...... maybe next time you'll see em they'll be around your neck! LOL! anywhos, for anyone that has used benechi thread, it is a bit more expensive (but seriously, 3 bucks for a spool, when you go per fly cost, is still negligible) the tensile strength is great for its size. Really strong, just dont' have any burrs on anything or rub it against something sharp cuz it'll break. its some pretty impressive stuff. steve
Carver 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2004 I prefer 8/0 thread for the same reasons as everyone else. I was not aware that it come any smaller than that. I'll have to see if my local guy can get it for me.
Lance Kekel 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2004 I mostly use the 8/0 for any trout flies also. The only time I use the 6/0 is when I'm tying Roberts Drakes or any other type of fly that has deer hair ties lengthwise down the body, mainly just to get any extra amount of durability that I can. Those teeth play really hell on those 8/0 wraps!
Guest Report post Posted July 1, 2004 I only carry three sizes of thread. 8/0, 6/0, and danvilles flat waxed nylon (for heavy spinning and tying jigs where head size doesn't matter). I mostly have the 6/0 spooled though. I do use the 8/0 with smaller flies (when I do tie from size 6-10) but rarely tie below that. I also use the 8/0 when I'm tying display flies where they want small, clean heads. I don't worry about kevlar or any of the smaller threads. Never had a head fall apart that I tied with a clear head (When I was on prescribed narcotics on a regular basis, man, I had tons of problems LOL). Usually if you tie with a steady hand and accurate pressure, you'll have a strong fly.
B.C.TroutHunter 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2004 I use 8/0 where fine detail is needed, but I will sometimes switch between the two up to five times on a single fly (but only on flies larger than size 6).
flydog33 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2004 I go with 6/0 down #14, then switch to 14/0 for smaller. For spinning hair I use Gudebrod Super G. I have trying using wapsi ultra thread ( nothing good to say ). I also have some clear thread for bait fish patterns.
Robert_S 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2004 The 8 is the way to go, haven't used 6 in over ten years, I wouldn't go buying a lot of different colors black and white yes other colors can be made by hitting the thread with a marker usually you only need the color at the head, have a box full a colors I never use.
