Ideas for easy bass and or pan patterns

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the hobbie and I'm looking for a few good patterns for bass and or pan. Everyone has told me to stay away from kits and find the patterns I like and get the items needed for them. Any and ever idea will help me to get started. Thanks

Start with clouser minnows and bugger type patterns. Particularly on the bugger type patterns, make them what you want. For example, the original bugger pattern had marabou tail, chenille body, and a hackle palmered the length of the shaft. I tie inthe marabou just at the tail, then twist it into a rope and wrap that up the shank, with hackle just at the head (optional). Makes it simpler, yet effective enough for me. Look through the database. You'll get ideas. the great thing is that fish don't have the official pattern book to compare too. Tie what you want and like.

The initial four links are for panfish flies that are productive as well as easy to tie. The fifth link contains a considerable amount of step by step patterns for panfish as well as bass, but vary considerably in the degree of difficulty. The final link contains info geared towards a beginner tyer. Fly Tying and Fishing for Panfish and Bass by Tom Keith is a nice step by step pattern book.
