siestafred 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by siestafred: Furl-a-gig
siestafred 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I've always been envious of the spin guys who have so much success with jigs in saltwater. So I'm developing this jig-like fly, which is actually pretty easy to tie once you get going. I got the idea form an article in Fly Tier in 2003 by Boyd Pfeiffer entitled "Worm Bass Flies". The fly in the photo is just under 4" long, but could easily be made bigger by furling 3 lengths of Estaz on a bigger hook. Any critique most welcome ! j74snook 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I was wondering what to do with the Xmas tree garland!!
day5 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I love it! You should try it on a jig hook also. There is a different action in the water with different degree jig hooks 30 60 90 degree. Im positive you have a fly that will catch fish!
JJD 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Looks great. The only modification I could think of would be to add a "puff" of marabou on the end. Thanks for sharing. I may spin up a couple for this weekend - I'm one of the judges for a local children's fishing tournament, but I'm hoping there will be sufficient free time. The only modification I could think of would be to add a "puff" of marabou on the end. Also a good suggestion. Have to think a bit on how to do that. Hmmm..... supaflygsr 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 One question for ya I tied one up today and wondered how stiff is the tail on yours? Saturated mine in water and was stiff as a plank maybe i used the wrong chenille?
siestafred 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 wondered how stiff is the tail on yours? The tail on mine is fairly "floppy". You may have wound it too tight, so try fewer twists and see if that helps. Fred
Fred H. 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 I also so fish along side fishermen with traditional tackle and there aspects to which I canot compete with. One of which is the soft plastic jigs . What you have tied is about the same size and profile of a popular soft plastic bait called a cocahoe. Normally fished with a 1/4 oz jig head. I think if you tied this fly on a jig type hook with an upturned eye it would allow the bait to rise and fall in the water more like the soft plastic jig. dafack01 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 I have to add that to my fly box! That looks killer! I see a BUNCH of Reds and Flounder pouncing on that thing!
Ridleyffo 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I started tying this type of fly earlier in the winter. I combined these two recipes. I tie it with some bead cbain eyes that should (havent fished it yet) flip it upside down and weedless. I also used purple estaz. Here are the recipes I originally used. The one recipe calls it a Ramsey estaz worm. http://www.warmwaterflytyer.com/patterns6.asp?page=15 http://www.flyfishersrepublic.com/patterns...sey-estaz-worm/

The ramsey one does furl the estaz. i never made one with a single strand, but my buddy just tried one the other day and I didnt like the feel of it in my hand. too thin as a single strand.
