Crystal Butt Hopper

Here's a step by step for a Crystal Butt Hopper. It's taken from Tying Flies With Foam, Fur & Feathers by Harrison Steeves.

 

Materials that I used. Mustad 3906B #10 hook, cutting board, straight edge, razor knife, silver tinsel chennile, rubber legs, silver krystal flash, deer hair, red & black sparkle foam, 1/4 dia leather punch, flat waxed nylon thread.

Cut body strips appx 1/4" wide with razor knife & straight edge.

Cut strips into appx 3/4" lg pieces.

Take (1) strand of rubber leg material & fold in half. I used some from Living Rubber Co.

Tied an overhand knot on the closed end.

Cut the loop & repeat with another piece for the 2nd leg.

Start your thread at the eye & wrap back to bend. Cut (1) strand of Krystal flash in half. With one of the halves fold over & cut loop. Repeat (3) times until you have (8) total pieces. Tie in at bend. Trim to appx 3/8" lg.

Tie in foam strip about 1/3 back from eye & wrap back to bend. Tie in 12" piece of upholstery thread at bend.

Tie in tinsel at bend.

Wrap tinsel forward & tie off. Fold foam body forward & tie off. Wrap upholstery thread forward to rib body & tie off.

Tie in rubber legs on both sides. You'll need to adjust them to get them to lay right. Trim ends.

Tie in deer hair & trim ends.

Punch 1/4" disc for head. Press punch into foam & rotate back & forth until it cuts thru. No need for a hammer.

Tie in foam head, a couple of half hitches & some head cement. It's ready to fish!

Very cool! I'm a big fan of Harrison Steeve's fly patterns and regularly carry dozens of his terrestrial patterns in my fishing fly boxes. His patterns are easy to tye, use inexpensive materials, and the catch fish like crazy.
