Tie a Woolly Bugger, Pheasant Tail, or Hare's Ear. You will learn the basics and all are fairly easy to tie. Most importantly, they will catch fish!

Welcome flyfisher715. What do you hope to catch with your flies? Trout? Bass? You might consider that when you make your decision on your first flies. For me, I started with Wooly Buggers, Griffith's Gnat, Gold-Ribbed Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tails, and Zebra Midges. With a few exceptions, nymphs are generally easier to tie than dry flies. At least for me. At first, I kept to the larger sizes (12-16). You don't want to tackle a too complicated pattern when you're first starting out. My first dries were Elk Hair Caddis and Adams. You might check out some of the other new guys' post: they've been turning out some impressive bass poppers. Check out some of the patterns in the "Fly Pattern Database". The main thing is...just find a pattern you like and dive in. Don't get discouraged and have fun. If you run into problems, don't hesitate to ask for help. The guys here on FTF are good, and are willing to help.

i started about a month ago and you will be amazed how much better you get in a week! try something easy like a stretch tubing scud or even bass poppers if you are into bass fishing.

I just started tying. I found the Damselfly nymph pretty simple to tie. Well, to me all flies are simple to tie, it is just the finished product that makes a difference from the newbies & the people that have the skillz.

tackling trout flys will be a good lesson................and most other fish dont know that theyre supposed to be for trout.

adams, hoppers, copper john, royal wulff..............are some good ones. each one of these will help reinforce/teach different techniques or ways of using materials.

above all make sure you have fun and remember nothings terminal.

if you got a whip finish down good..............your in good shape

Tie some soft-hackled spider patterns. They are about as easy as it gets, but as you tie up a few dozen in different colors with and without dubbing really concentrate on thread control. Practice nice tight even wraps, smooth bodies, body tapers, dubbing amounts and techniques, and finishing small heads. These style of flies will catch trout anywhere and I think are one the best patterns to build a solid foundation in tying.
